World Schizophrenia Awareness Day aims to educate and reduce the stigma surrounding schizophrenia. WHO statistics report that 24 million people worldwide…or 1 in 100 people will experience schizophrenia and men are twice as likely to develop the condition than women. Symptoms tend to develop during the late teens to mid-30s and impacts individuals in different ways. Contrary to common belief, living with schizophrenia does not mean you have multiple personalities. The term schizophrenia comes from the Greek word “fractured mind” and refers to changes in mental function. Those living with schizophrenia face the daunting hurdle of discerning reality from illusion, which causes difficulties in navigating daily life.

By raising awareness and erasing stigma and fostering compassion, we create a safe space where stories are heard, hearts are embraced, and lives are illuminated with hope. Let us advocate dismantling misconceptions and nurturing a world where acceptance, understanding, and opportunities flourish for all living with schizophrenia.

As we commemorate the legacy of courage, resilience and mateship, that they left behind, we honour their memory and express our gratitude for their sacrifices. Let us uphold the values of freedom and democracy that the ANZACs fought for and renew our pledge to these principles to ensure that their legacy inspires generations to come.
