ANNOUNCEMENT | STAFF CHANGES
Dear Association Members,
I hope this message finds you well.
I am writing to inform you about some recent changes within our association. Last week, we received resignations from Lucas Allen on Thursday, followed by Gerard Hillier on Friday, and Jenna McCormick on Monday. While these departures are significant, they are not entirely unexpected.
As you may recall, last year, Basketball Victoria informed us that our attempt to reach NBL1 was unsuccessful, resulting in our exclusion for at least two years. The reasons cited included lack of attendance, staff turnover and stability. Despite multiple conversations and plans, we ultimately did not receive permission to participate in NBL1 this year. With the expectation of playing NBL1 and subsequently not having a position available this year some individuals are understandably looking towards their own career aspirations.
Additionally, there have been several challenges since the AGM in February 2024. At the end of last year, we lost all major sponsors except Impact Sports. Victoria University chose not to renew their sponsorship due to economic constraints, though we are moving towards a partnership with them. Invicta folded, and JRS has declined to fulfill their sponsorship commitment from last year, despite our attempts to contact and discuss with them. These factors have also contributed to our current situation. Accountability and value for money are crucial for any association. Our efforts to assess staff activities, look at whether our structure was optimal, conduct performance reviews, identification of gaps in HR processes, clarity regarding staff roles and hours kept due to multiple hats were perceived by some as micromanagement. As a result of all these factors the current Executive saw the departure of these staff members as inevitable.
To those concerned about the association's direction, I want to emphasize that change, while challenging, can lead to growth and improvement. We are committed to transparency and regular communication with all of our stakeholders. We have outsourced our bookkeeping, revisited our governance structures and set aside funds into a strategic account. Our programs are showing positive results, and we have initiated a strategic review involving stakeholders from various groups - including externally - to develop an actionable plan.
Both Lucas and Gerard have graciously offered to see out the end of the season as the Champ Men Head Coach and Champ Women Head Coach, respectively, to minimise disruption. We have contingency plans in place to ensure the smooth continuation of our programs. We understand their aspirations and want to thank all the staff who are leaving for their contribution over the years and wish them the very best in their future careers.
I have to finish by saying I am heartened by the sheer volume and number of individuals who have reached out, expressing interest in returning to Wyndham in light of these changes. The positive responses outweigh the concerns, and we believe this transition will allow us to restructure our staffing and achieve the growth we envision.
We will begin the recruitment process immediately and keep you updated on our progress, however we do not have a timeframe on this as we look to attract quality people. The important thing for us is that people are playing basketball and will continue to play basketball regularly.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mike White
WBA President

Support Our U14.1 Boys in Their Shot at Nationals! π
Continuing the momentum, our U14.1 Boys have an incredible opportunity to make it to the national club champs, and we need your support!
Great effort by the boys and Coach Hacky to be in this position! They will be taking on Bulleen on:
π Date: 12th of July
π Time: 7:40 PM
π Location: Eagle Stadium
Letβs get as many people down to Eagle Stadium as possible to cheer them on and keep Bulleen on their toes.
5 teams from Victoria are selected for the nationals. Wyndham and Bulleen were the two 3rd place teams in each pool following the 1st round of VC. VJBL decided the fairest way to decide who qualifies was to have their game scheduled for this date, and the winner qualifies for Nationals. Letβs show our support and help our U14.1 Junior Classics National team secure their spot! πͺπ½
