It has been a couple of weeks since our container full of hospital supplies was collected from RARE Central-DIK. It has since been loaded on to the Maersk Sebarok and is on the high seas (currently off the coast of Malaysia) bound for the port of Freetown, Sierra Leone. There it will be offloaded for the road trip to the new Salmana Heart Foundation Hospital in Tumbu. It's exciting to see this project coming to fruition.

As regular followers of our page are aware, August has been a busy month for our Club members; Friends of the Club and quite a number of volunteers.

Saturday 5th was the first day spent packing Hospital Equipment and Medical Supplies in a shipping container that will soon be bound for the Tombo (Tumbu) in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Around two dozen people descended on the RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Service RARE Central-DIK warehouse at Edinburgh that day.

After 6 hours the container was about 60% full and muscles were sore … so, on Saturday 12th and Tuesday 15th, smaller teams convened to continue the charge.

By 1pm on the 15th the container was filled to capacity, the doors were locked and cheers rang out.

The estimated value of the equipment and supplies in the container is $AU600,000. To see the full cargo manifest (it’s impressive), more photos from each of the loading days and to learn about the many organisations and individuals who have backed this project visit:

There’s already talking about a second container and fundraising efforts continue. If you’d like to make a tax deductible donation go to:

For this photo, we only managed to corral about half the volunteers who turned up at RARE Central-DIK last Saturday. Many of them (and those not in shot) will be back tomorrow to finish packing medical equipment and supplies into the container that will soon be bound for Sierra Leone.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Central loading their container with medical supplies and equipment at the RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Service RARE Central-DIK at Edinburgh South Australia. The equipment will be shipped to a new 30-bed hospital in the remote Tombo (Tumbu) region of Sierra Leone. The hospital has been funded by Ibrahim Barrie and his partner, Samira.

Once the container reaches its destination and has been emptied, the container will be modified for use within the hospital complex as a training centre for nurses and doctors.

Excitement is building amongst Adelaide Central Rotarians as a very special international project comes to fruition.

Ibrahim Barrie and his partner, Samira, have of their own volition funded and coordinated (from Adelaide) the construction of a 30-bed hospital in the remote Tombo (Tumbu) region of Sierra Leone.

Ibrahim approached Rotary Adelaide Central last year for assistance with sourcing medical equipment and supplies for the hospital, as well as the logistical and financial process of getting it all from Adelaide to Tumbu.

We promptly introduced Ibrahim to Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment, aka Donations In Kind (RARE Central-DIK), who were delighted to help source the mind-boggling array of equipment and medical supplies that are needed for a hospital to function: 30 medical beds; scanners; monitors, ultrasound and ECG machines, and so much more. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Mount Barker, there’s even a flat-packed playground ready to go.

It’s an amazing project and our Club is stoked to be involved. We acquired the pictured 40ft shipping container (thank you SA Mushrooms for your generous donation), have had it repainted and this Saturday members and other volunteers will gather at RARE DIK to load it.

Once the container reaches its destination and has been emptied, the container will be modified for use within the hospital complex as a training centre for nurses and doctors.

You can read more about the Salmana Heart Foundation Hospital and Rotary Adelaide Central’s role in the project at

You can also learn more about what motivated Ibrahim and Samira to take on this mammoth task if you read his profile in the members section of our website.

One final note, it was our very great please to induct Ibrahim as a member of Rotary Adelaide Central during our recent changeover dinner.

Thank you all for your wonderful generosity.

The NSW Government and RAWCS advises that the appeal for the Hunter Valley Tragedy has just hit $800,000.

A committee has been formed which includes members of the Singleton Sunrise Rotary Club, Singleton Council, Singleton Roosters AFL Club, Warrandyte-Donvale Rotary Club and the Warrandyte Cricket Club. The immediate beneficiaries have been identified and the funds are in the process of being distributed directly to them.

The fund is being managed though our Charity the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society and I wish to assure you that all funds, apart from our 2.75% (incl GST) administration fee, will be remitted to the eligible recipients. Those eligible are defined as those people who were directly affected by the bus crash (on the bus or the four wedding guests following in a car that witnessed the crash and rendered immediate aid) and their immediate family (parents, partners, siblings and children). Special provision will be made for the two boys who sadly became orphans as a result of this terrible event.

The Board of RAWCS and the Rotarians of the Singleton Sunrise Rotary Club and their committee, set up to manage the fund distribution, are all volunteers and we very much appreciate your support in extending community compassion, through the fund, to those most impacted by the crash.

President Bill was delighted to receive a call last week from a member of Royal Adelaide Hospital Renal Unit Clinical Trials team asking if Rotary could put some surplus medical supplies to good use. He, of course, said "absolutely".

The donation of a Medication Pump, boxes of lines; and some cartons of blood test vials is now with Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment (RARE, formerly Donations In Kind or DIK) – a major equipment repurposing project.

Hostipal beds organised by Donations in Kind have arrived in Fiji and distributed to the following hospitals Nuffield Health Centre,
Tamavua Hospital, Samabula Health Centre and
Raiwaqa Health Centre.

The Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services provided the feedback on receiving the beds: “ Really boost our morale of work, seeing this, it tells us that people really need our services and sacrifice. Our work is not in vain, through this we bring relief and smiles to the people of Fiji. I am really satisfied seeing this. Thank you all for making it happen”.
