Firebreak Farm Videos

Videos by Firebreak Farm. Ethical and regenerative farming raising produce on pasture in the Bunya Mountain foothills, QLD.

We promised an update - so here it is!

Kylea’s done herself a mischief and will be (quite literally) off her feet for a little while. Due to this, we will be pausing our attendance at the Jan Power’s Farmer’s Markets for the foreseeable future.

Never fear though - we’ve just added some new produce box offerings for order on our website and thanks to our partnership with @thefarmshopfarmersmarket we are able to deliver our produce to you fortnightly from Gold Coast to Sunshine Coast and out to Dalby and surrounds! Link in our bio for more details! ➡️

We’ve expanded the Firebreak footprint to Jinibara Country with a new lease block that Ace, Maggie and I will be living at! She needs some work, so we’re bringing the pigs to help renovate. Managing our livestock across the two properties is our first challenge but with Jane and Frank continuing to caretake in Neumgna, we’re excited as the Firebreak team to take our farm into this next chapter and continue to feed our awesome community!

We’d love to answer any questions that you might have and we’re so excited to have you along for the journey! 🌱📦👩‍🌾

Let’s talk about some poo 💩 Dung beetles: Nature’s soil engineers! 🌿 🪲 Did you know these tiny powerhouses are vital for regeneration? By efficiently recycling poo, they enhance soil structure, reduce pests, and boost nutrient availability. Embracing their role is key to regenerative agriculture and a healthier planet. 🌍🐞 Let’s give a shout-out to the unsung champions of the soil! #DungBeetles #RegenerativeFarming #regenerativeagriculture #cowpoo

Hey 👋🏻 We have some new followers, so we thought it was time to introduce ourselves again! We’re Firebreak Farm - a family-owned and operated regenerative farm located on Wakka Wakka country. We ethically raise pork, lamb and beef on pasture and value producing quality produce for our community through regenerative practices. That’s it! Simple as that! If you’re new to supporting local farmers, welcome! We know this landscape can be confusing and there is a massive lack of transparency around where a lot of food actually comes from. In fact, there are some businesses that deliberately attempt to piggy-back off our (and other regenerative farmers) hard work to sell what is effectively wholesale meat under the banner of ‘paddock-to-plate’. We are firm believers in transparency, so we share it all here. The good days and the bad - because they both exist. And, regenerative farming is particularly hard sometimes. We will do our best to help you cut through the crap to ensure you know what is involved in producing ethical and regenerative produce. So, thanks for following along. Thanks for asking questions. Thanks for supporting your farmers directly. Particularly, the ones that share the whole story. ❤️ #supportfarmers #localfarmers #regenag #shoplocal #eatlocalproduce #localfoodsystems

Following on from our stories the other day, we’ve rotated our growers! 🌱🐖 Coupla’ cheeky buggers not too keen on relocating but they were pretty keen to get in there yesterday morning after they saw their friends getting into some fresh grass! Having pigs on pasture isn’t the easiest option by any stretch. There are SO many aspects that make this method of farming challenging - careful pasture management, moving water, fences, cheeky pigs. But, we wouldn’t have it any other way. We know how happy and healthy our pigs are which translates into amazing, nutritious produce to feed our community. That makes it all worth it! Do you know where your pork comes from and how it was treated? If the answer is no, there might be a reason why they aren’t showing you. (Hint: Google images - industrial pork…😧) Once you go regeneratively pastured pork, you won’t go back! 🥓 #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativeagriculturemovement #regenerativefarmersofaustralia #pasturedpork #ethicalpork

2024 might be the year that the pigs take over…🐽 #pastureraisedpork #ethicalfarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #paddocktoplate #pasturedpork #australianpork #australianporkfarmers

Did you know not all soil is made the same? Some soil types have certain benefits for the growth of grasses and legumes. We’re pretty lucky here to have clay loam soil across the farm. Which is a mixture of sand, clay and silt soils. Our soil is great for grass growing, because it’s a little bit firmer and has the ability to hold moisture! But, just because you have a good soil composition, doesn’t mean that you have healthy soil. Mismanagement of even the greatest composition will result in stripping of nutrients and force a reliance on synthetic inputs to produce yield. There are three components to good soil - composition, pH and nutrients. That’s why regenerative agriculture is so important! We foster a relationship between animal and land which helps to cycle nutrients, increase water retention, and curb weed and pest problems without the use of chemicals. By minimising soil disruption, ensuring we maintain ground cover and introducing natural organic matter through livestock, we can leverage off our beautiful soil composition to improve its fertility and feed communities!

At Firebreak Farm, we avoid disturbing our soil as much as possible! We use an aerator to puncture the surface to help prevent runoff and increase soil water absorption and retention. Our planting setup is simply a seed box with various species, trickling seed onto the ground behind the aerator. A set of trailing harrows leaves a light soil cover over the seed. With a strong forecast of rain for this week, Ace planted a couple of paddocks that our pigs have been living and working in, removing the unpalatable grasses for us and fertilising with their manure. Fingers crossed for a good steady soaking in coming days 🤞

Betty, one of our Birkshire sows, has had 8 piglets in the last few days! Did you know that we breed and raise all of our pork here on Firebreak Farm? That helps us control the quality of our produce but also ensures that we control the quality of our animals lives too! Even though it’s dry right now, Betty was still able to manage a beautiful nest to have her litter of piglets and everyone seems pretty happy down in the paddock! Do you have questions about the difference between pasture-raised pigs and factory farms? Ask away! We’d love to point out the many benefits to both the animal and the consumer!
