Coronavirus disease (COVID-19): Masks 31/01/2022

Are you using your face mask so that it will best protect you?
We are seeing many people who are not getting the best protection from their mask. A couple of critical things have not been well promoted to the public.
Firstly, cloth masks should be washed every day.
Secondly, paper masks should be disposed every day and worn with the blue layer facing out. This has a fine "waxy" coating to help trap viruses.

From the WHO website here are the basics of how to wear a mask:
1. Clean your hands before you put your mask on, as well as before and after you take it off, and after you touch it at any time.
2. Make sure it covers both your nose, mouth and chin.
3. When you take off a mask, store it in a clean plastic bag, and every day either wash it if it’s a fabric mask, or dispose of a medical mask in a trash bin.
4. Don’t use masks with valves.

There are three types of masks that WHO recommend for the public:

1. Reusable non-medical masks which comply with the ASTM F3502 standard or CEN Working Agreement 17553, or a non-medical mask meeting WHO essential parameters;
2. Disposable medical masks which comply with medical mask standards EN 14683 Type I, ASTM F2100 Level 1, YY/T 0969, YY 0469 (or equivalent);
3. Other types of well-fitting non-medical masks, including homemade multi-layered masks are an acceptable option, when other options are not available.

Disposable medical masks are also recommended for the following groups, because if infected, they are at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19 and dying:
- People aged 60 or over.
- People of any age with underlying health conditions, including chronic respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, immunocompromised patients and diabetes mellitus.

A respirator or a medical mask should be worn by caregivers at any setting where care is provided to patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, including home care, long-term care facilities and community care settings.

More information on masks can be found on the WHO website
https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/question-and-answers-hub/q-a-detail/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-masks

Christmas is fast approaching and the dilemma is often “what do you buy the person who has everything”?

It can be especially challenging when that person is a Senior. Rather than chocolates or socks consider a different tack this year and think about what might help make their lives more comfortable and fulfilled.

There are inexpensive gadgets available to help them with simple everyday tasks like opening jars in the kitchen or applying lotion to their body.

You could choose to help keep them safe with a night lamp that switches on with a gentle touch, no fumbling for switches in the dark.

Enjoying pastimes like reading or knitting suddenly became as easy as ever with book holders and magnifying lights. Perhaps they used to avid gardeners until moving into a unit, if so the amazing Urbipod brings the garden inside.

Upgrade them to a classy fashion walking stick which sends a fashion message.

Treat them to some luxury with a reclining leather lounge chair that also lifts up to help them sit down and get up.

Comfort in or out of bed can be even better with an ottoman or a bed wedge.

Help them get in and out of the car and if also no longer driving they can still be independent with an electric scooter which needn’t cost the earth.

To stimulate some ideas for a gift for the senior in your life The Mobility Store has come up with a list for you to browse. https://www.mobilitystore.com.au/gifts-giving

Here’s 6 tips to help you age-proof your knees, courtesy of The Australian Women’s Weekly:

Don’t ignore the initial niggles of aches and pain.

Have you ever ignored a slight pain in your knee and thought - “Well I guess my body just isn’t like it used to be?” If you leave it, you might end up putting a bit more strain in your other joints, which includes your ankle, hip, lower back and even your other leg.

Keep an eye on your weight

Most people will gain half a kilo a year as adults, and many won’t even realise it. Packing on these excess pounds can affect your joints and even lead to low-grade inflammation.

Move moderately

When it comes to a little knee pain, gentle exercise is better than complete rest. If the pain is manageable and not unbearable, it’s better to do something than nothing at all.

Read the signs

Our body likes to give us information on whether to do more or less. When you get knee pain during activity, try to measure it and keep a record of how much it hurts. This way you can make sure you won’t add any extra stress that your knee can’t handle. When you need to increase your level of activity, try not to go past 10%. That means that if you could walk 10 minutes yesterday with bearable knee pain, only add 1 minute maximum to your walk today. That way you can make sure you’re staying safe and looking after your knee.

Exercise! Exercise!

Staying active, no matter what your age, can help delay the onset of Osteoarthritis and possibly even surgery. As a general rule, staying strong from an early age supports all the joints of the body.

Don’t make it about your number

It's a common perception that Osteoarthritis happens in older adults, but two-thirds of people who present with it are under 65. Just because we are older doesn't mean we will experience more knee pain.
