The recently opened River's Edge building at University of Tasmania: a stunning facility for learning, teaching, and research along the scenic edge of the North Esk River.
Utilising 5mm vertical stainless steel cables and Carl Stahl Group I-SYS® cable clamps, our team designed, manufactured, and supplied a compliant safety barrier along the upper levels of the atrium. The impressive cable installation complements the timber and brick surfaces, drawing the eye up to the large hovering timber lightwells overhead.
Very happy to be involved in the creation of this well-lit, dynamic, and environmentally friendly learning environment, working closely alongside the builder, Fairbrother. Architecture by the always inspiring Wardle.

After the closure of a non-compliant 1960’s bridge connecting two sections of the campus, students at Flinders University in Adelaide faced the prospect of a long walk through parkland to access classes.
Working with Cox Architects, Ronstan was able to rejuvenate the bridge with the addition of a lightweight, tensioned, free-form tensile mesh barrier and cable net. While the structure is visually simplistic and highly transparent, it is fully compliant providing safe passage day and night.
The Adelaide Oval has often been referred to as one of the most picturesque ovals in the world. The challenge for the architects, Hassell & Cox, was to design a grandstand that did not adversely affect this reputation. The grandstand had to be modern and yet remain sympathetic to the strong heritage context of the facility.
The existing heritage grandstand had iconic arched brick walls. Part of the charm of these arches was the network of climbing vines that covered almost half the height of the walls during the summer months. Mesh facades to the new grandstand stair towers were designed and installed as trellis structures to preserve and enhance this key aesthetic of the stadium.

The Story Bridge is a heritage-listed cantilever bridge spanning the Brisbane River. Developing an effective anti-fall and throw barrier system to overcome the limited load capacity of the existing structure, while preserving the heritage architecture, was a complex task. The final installation spanning the full length of both sides of the bridge provides an efficient, protective screen in a form that is unobtrusive for passing pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

In 2019, 222 Lonsdale Street in Melbourne refurbished its lobby to create an attractive and welcoming space. This included a series of sculptural blades suspended to the ceiling of the glass roof. Ronstan was engaged to suspend the completed Perspex® blades, which included the design of the cables, connections, and suspension elements.
Initially to be fixed permanently in place, Ronstan was able to recommend, manufacture, and install a track system with dynamic suspension points to allow the blades to be moved for maintenance. This realized efficiencies in the support structure while ensuring an easy mechanism for regular cleaning and maintenance.

Taronga Zoo Chimpanzee Enclosure is a free form fully enclosed tensile mesh enclosure surrounding a 470m2 paddock area. The enclosure is comprised of three main components: the free form enclosure mesh and cable net, 8 masts with integrated climbing structures, and an independent non-climb wall on the Southeast face of the structure to prevent chimpanzees from climbing from the adjacent paddock. This inclined wall is comprised of perforated aluminium panels which are secured to a tensile cable net with stainless steel clamps.
Throughout the design and analysis process, Ronstan established the final mesh form that dramatically improved the design, reduced costs, and ensured tighter compliance with the brief.

William McCormack Place II is a nine storey office building in Cairns, QLD. This grid-style cable trellis is comprised of horizontal and vertical cables which affix to the supporting walls via stainless steel wall mounts. The trellis flows up vertical walls, and folds back horizontally across the canopy enabling full cover over the pergola.
The effect is a vibrant, cool, and fresh space within which the building occupants can enjoy the fresh air and shade provided by the structure. The trellis has been fully engineered to ensure long term structural performance, as the plants grow and apply increasing load to the system.

Our Lady of Mercy College is a Catholic school for girls in Parramatta. Sustainability was a major factor in the design of this building, which was completed in 2017. The tensile mesh facade of the Eastern balcony performs dual functions - as a fully compliant barrier as well as a trellis structure to support climbing plants, softening the facade and providing shade.
The 470m2 barrier and cable trellis facade has become a major feature of the campus and is enjoyed by the whole school community.

The award-winning Southbank Grand Arbour is a kilometre-long arbour located in the Southbank Parklands in Brisbane, Australia. The functional pedestrian walkway, which connects the Griffith Film School and Vulture Street to the Cultural Forecourt, is internationally recognized as the most successful arbour structure in the Southern Hemisphere. This was the first significant tensile cable net arbour structure completed in Australia.
Ronstan worked closely alongside Connell Wagner engineers and Denton Corker Marshall architects to help optimise the design and specification of the structural cable, clamp, and bracing elements. The result is a structure that stands today as an international reference for horticultural structures and their use in high traffic urban spaces.
