I'm always blown away at how much little ones grow between their newborn session and 1 year later, particularly when I don't see them at a time in between. Miss Gracie had six adults and a photographer wrapped around her little finger on Saturday afternoon as we explored the family property.

Most people will tell you that their dog is the goodest boy (or girl), but I may have found the actual goodest boy yesterday. Dusty and I were BFFs from minute one, and he rested his head in my lap or against my hip on more than one occasion. He showed me his blanky, he played with bubbles, and he hung out with his humans while playing video games. Such a great session capturing a family where they are most relaxed. Future client please don't be afraid to request a session at home.

Whenever I start a session with dogs, I always do some checks with them to see how they react to the camera, and then adjust my approach for the session accordingly. Based on previous experience, I was ready to have to use some distance with Ghost the Husky, and be up and close ready to constantly dish out treats for Zira the Lab. These two flipped it on me though, with Ghost not caring at all about the camera (closer the better), and Zira preferring to take a back seat and making me work very hard to get those ears to pop up (if they did at all).

arnold's best day ever //

I had the pleasure of capturing Arnold's best day ever on Sunday to celebrate his 10th birthday. Like all good things, it started with coffee, and a trip to Woodmans Axe for some puppacinos. Then off to Macca's drive-through to pick up a sausage mcmuffin. A quick stroll through Queens Park followed by another drive (and a rest at home). Then in the afternoon I meet the crew at North Wall Beach where he reluctantly posed for portraits and family photos before doing some dog-watching with Daphne, and a refreshing dip in the ocean. No better way to finish off such an amazing day than demolishing a cake from Barking Mad Treats!

I know their humans were a little worried how these two would go during their session, but they did great. Distracted? Sure. Immune to my noise making within a couple of minutes? Definitely. But thanks to their humans staying calm and relaxed, and their 'spare' human Daniel helping out in the background, we could capture both of them and let them have some fun in the process.

My number one priority with extended family sessions is to make them fun. There is nothing worse than having to pose with family and stare at a camera. If, however, as a family, you relax, laugh with each other, and enjoy each other's company, that translates to the final images.
