Valkyrie Storm
Valkyrie Storm is rolling in from the north-east of Adelaide. Roller derby fans take cover! https://www.redbubble.com/people/mcrollergirls/works/12390239-v
Five years ago the MCRG family grew by one when B***y Rumbles (pictured) came into the world, long before the party was scheduled to start! This year we also met Rock n rOli, again way too eager to meet his awesome parents to stay inside until he was fully cooked.
In honour of our littlest and most impatient members and their families, representatives of MCRG are getting up bright and early (on a Sunday! After a bout!) and trading our skates for sneakers to walk in the annual Life's Little Treasures' Walk For Prems.
Without the support of this wonderful organisation, the MCRG family, and many other families across Australia, couldn't imagine where we'd be, and MCRG is proud to put our love, our support, and our feet behind them.
You can show your love as well! Simply follow the link below to donate to Life's Little Treasures. Thank you for your support!

This week is Deaf Awareness Week, raising awareness and challenging perceptions of hearing loss and deafness across the UK.
Lyd Vicious is a hard of hearing skater on our team and has written what it is like to play a sport with hearing loss and is encouraging others with the disability to give Roller Derby a go and to raise awareness to other teams to adapt to their needs.
Deafness and Derby.
It was eight years ago when I lost a great deal of my hearing after a bad fall and trauma to my head while at the Roller Rink -go figure- which broke my Auditory Ossicle, the three tiniest bones in the body (go me!) - the hammer, the anvil and the stirrup and also damaged my nerves (helmets are important, I had to learn the hard way!). I am left with less than 20% hearing in my left ear and less than 80% in my right ear, and my hearing is declining and will continue to do so. This had made life understandably difficult.. So why did I even think about trying a sport, especially Roller Derby?!
When I first started Roller Derby 6 years ago, the thing I remember most was the 2 whistle starts. On the first whistle the pack goes and on the second whistle the jammer goes, but when jamming I could never hear the second whistle once the pack started moving and the sound of wheels clattering and people shouting muffled any other noise. There's so much going on at all times while on track, how was this ever going to work?!
Usually in sports, you read a lot of things about discrimination or isolation against someone with something such as hearing loss but my team made a few simple adjustments, so on the second whistle a teammate would signal with their hand to let me know when the whistle had been blown. This was a huge indicator to me that this sport was so special. People want to help, people want to make this sport adaptable for everyone and that help and understanding has not stopped even into my third, current team - North Cheshire Victory Rollers.
As time and Derby has moved on, obviously two whistle starts are no longer a thing but there are still things that can be a struggle when you have hearing loss. Can't hear a referee whistle and shout your penalty - that's fine, they will (safely) get ahead of you so that you can see them give you that penalty. A great thing is that Roller Derby uses a lot of hand gestured signals which is perfect for someone with hearing loss and who uses sign language, it can often take a few attempts but that adaption and understanding is there and that is what is so great about this sport.
Can't hear your instruction to leave the penalty box? That's fine, too! All the penalty box officials are given a heads up beforehand to tap me on the shoulder and with a small, simple hand signal to tell me to stand up and then to leave. It's small things like this that make a huge, important impact on someone who could otherwise feel very isolated.
My team have been fantastic, many have been keen to learn some sign language, which is always a useful tool to have. They always know to face me or repeat to me when running through drills as I rely mainly on lip reading.
A few years ago I had a huge knock to my confidence over wearing my hearing aids and for a few years I wouldn't be seen wearing them! I finally gave in this year and wore my hearing aids out and to training and got so much love and praise, it made me feel accepted and that I shouldn't be embarrassed of my hearing loss anymore. Now I wear my hearing aids and my hard of hearing sticker on my helmet with pride. I'm partially deaf and playing a sport that is so accepting and inclusive of it, I should be proud!
My hope is that more people with disabilities such as mine are able to find Roller Derby or any other sport with as much inclusivity. I have been incredibly lucky to find this sport which has given me great friends and great confidence.
Deaf awareness week is a great time to remind people that there are people with hearing loss who want to be involved in sports but feel that they would be isolated. I wanted to use this platform and my experience to show that there are sports out there that are adaptable and inclusive of anyone, it just takes a little bit of understanding.
And remember, helmets are important!!
