Thank you to all who have served. On this day we give thanks and remember all those who sacrificed everything so that we might live our lives in freedom. We remember also the missing, the POWs, the maimed and wounded and we also remember those for whom the quiet of peace was more terrible than the chaos of war and suffered physiological harm. We have lost too many brothers and sisters to the scourge of su***de. We need to find a way to help them better

Lest we forget!

Don’t ever let yourself think the best of your life is behind you. Strive towards the new challenge, the new adventure even if you don’t know what that is yet.

The truth is that we are often our own worst critic when it comes to judging the worth of our contribution. Your past doesn’t have to be your future if you can recognise and silence your internal voices of self doubt.

What is the Lat Long or the "The Geographical Coordinate system"

The most well-known coordinate system in use today is the geographical coordinate system which divides the earth into 360 degrees vertically (longitude) and 180 degrees horizontally (latitude).
Degrees are further broken down into minutes and seconds creating the ability to form extremely precise coordinates- the Sydney Opera House for instance is located 33 degrees, 51 minutes, and 14.99 seconds south of the equator and 151 degrees, 12 minutes and 33 seconds east of the prime meridian (the prime meridian in this system is Greenwich England), this can be written like this- 33°51'14.99" S 151°12'33.00" E.
One issue with the geographical coordinate system is that degrees, minutes, and seconds are not an absolute size. As an example, to move 1 degree east (1° Longitude) at the equator is 111.3km while in Sydney, Australia (33° south Latitude) moving 1° east would mean travelling 55.6km. This is because the earth is roughly spherical- the circumference of the earth at the equator is 40’075km while the circumference at 33° south (Sydney) is about half that being 20’018km.
A grid system that attempts to minimise this variation is the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM). The UTM is a grid reference system.

Get your kids off of social media. It is dangerous and damaging.
“A recent study found that when researchers created accounts belonging to fictitious 13-year-olds, they were quickly inundated with videos about eating disorders, body image, self-harm and su***de.”

So very true

A mentor during the early stages of my career once said to me, "If you can't manage yourself, how can you expect to manage others."

I didn't quite grasp the gravitas of this simple one-liner until I started experiencing leaders that weren’t taking care of themselves…

For example:

👎🏼 They worked long hours and had poor sleep patterns.

➡️ This meant that they had a short fuse, often acted irrationally and transferred that exhaustion onto their teams.

👎🏼 They had a poor diet and smoked about a pack a day.

➡️ This translated into them being overweight, having little-to-no energy and struggling to stay alert and switched on.

👎🏼 They couldn’t regulate their emotions, cope with stress and reflect on their actions.

➡️ This affected their ability to act with compassion, be agile and make quick decisions, and improve on their leadership skills.

That simple advice I received years ago is why my leadership training workshops prioritise this order:

First, I focus on self-mastery.
Then, I focus on team-mastery.

I want to first create the best possible version of the person in front of me, before I focus on developing them into an exceptional leader.

Lead yourself first.
And then, you can graduate to leading others.

Today we reflect on those who gave their all, their very last measure so we can live in peace. We remember those whose bodies and or minds were shattered in the service of our nation. We remember those who are simply listed as missing, their loved ones never knowing or comforted by a marker or word of how their loved one vanished, a hole in their lives that never healed. We remember those who waited for loved ones who never returned, or if they did return were never the same person who left. Our fledgling nation has borne the brunt of war that has now been woven into the legend that is Australia. Yet it was not for King or Country, not for glory or the pursuit of Valor that so much was sacrificed. It was for their mates beside them, brothers bound by a ties and love deeper than blood. To ensure loved ones left behind need never face the horrors and desolation of war. So in the morning we honour them. Not to glorify them, but to say thank you and pay tribute to the sacrifices made that we can never repay, the wounds and scars across a nations we can never repair, because they gave the full measure of what was needed so we can live, love and pursue our passions. Lest we forget.

Situational awareness. Food for thought 🤔

The general public will tend to just drift through their day. You will be surprised by what you don’t see when going about your day to day travels. It’s not a problem until it becomes your problem. Be aware of your surroundings as time and distance is your friend. On the other side of the coin, you will be surprised how easy it is to hide in plain sight by fitting into social norms. Something we often did when working in the counter terrorist space.

I’ve been very fortunate to be able to continue to contribute back to the Australian Defence Force. As a civilian firm I get to work with friends and operators from around the world. I get to partake in cutting edge training and work with military manufacturers trialling new technologies and equipment not yet put to market. Now that Kinetic is in partnership with Trojan International Defense Group this has only increased our exposure and reach worldwide. Next stop, Thailand CPP course.
