Some timely published research from AgriFutures Australia
🔬Exciting breakthrough in the fight against ‘rattles’ in foals 🐴
Groundbreaking research conducted at the University of Sydney has found that the naturally occurring viruses’ bacteriophages have the potential to suppress the growth of rattles-causing bacteria (R. equi) in soil.
💊 With the emergence of drug-resistant strains of R. equi, alternative solutions are crucial to prolong the effectiveness of current treatments in infected foals. Bacteriophages only target specific bacterial strains, reducing the risk of resistance development and minimising off-target impacts.
“Bacteriophages can suppress R. equi growth in soil and foal faeces. This could lead to better environmental and gut burden management for stud managers, potentially reducing the risk of airborne exposure and lung infections,” said Project lead Dr Gary Muscatello.
The benefits of phage therapy could be significant, including cost savings from reduced clinical cases and increased foal survival, which could potentially be worth millions of dollars and improve the quality of the foal crop annually. 🐎
This groundbreaking research offers hope for better disease management in foals and highlights the potential of phages as a powerful tool in combating bacterial infections. 🦠
