The Albanese Government has just announced that they will establish a Commonwealth Prac Payment to support students undertaking mandatory workplace placements required for university and vocational education and training qualifications.
Australians studying to be a teacher, a nurse, a midwife or a social worker will be eligible for this payment.
This new payment will provide around 68,000 eligible higher education students and over 5,000 VET students each year with $319.50 per week during their clinical and professional placement periods.
UTS ALP Club welcomes the Albanese Government’s announcement today that will cut the student debt of more than 3 million Australians in this month’s Budget.
The Government will cap the HELP indexation rate to be the lower of either the Consumer Price Index or the Wage Price Index with effect from 1 June 2023.
This will benefit all Australians with a HELP debt, fixing the issue of last year’s spike in the CPI indexation rate of 7.1 per cent and preventing growth in debt from outpacing wages in the future.
UTS has been out doorknocking in Greenway and Riverstone for Warren Kirby MP and Michelle Rowland MP over the last couple weeks, talking about Labor’s cost of living measures and tax cuts!
Thank you Marjorie O’Neill - Member for Coogee for being our Welcome Drinks Special Guest and for sharing your experiences with us. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to hear from you and look forward to joining you for the EMILY's List Australia Young Women’s Policy Caucus next Monday!

UTS ALP Club welcomes today’s announcements from the Federal Minister for Education, the Hon. Jason Clare MP, including that the Albanese Government will act on the five immediate actions the Accord Panel has identified, by:
1. Establishing up to 20 additional Regional University Study Hubs (formerly Regional University Centres), building on the 34 existing Regional University Study Hubs currently operating across the country, and establishing up to 14 Suburban University Study Hubs.
2. Abolishing the 50 percent pass rule, introduced as part of the Job-ready Graduates Scheme, which has had a disproportionately negative impact on students from poor backgrounds and from the regions, and requiring increased reporting on student progress.
3. Extending demand driven funding to all First Nations students who are eligible for the course they apply for. Currently this only applies to First Nations students in regional and remote Australia.
4. Extending the Higher Education Continuity Guarantee for a further two years to provide funding certainty to universities as the Accord process rolls out, and as part of this, requiring universities to invest any remaining funding from their grant each year on additional academic and learning support for students from poor backgrounds, from the regions and from other under-represented groups.
5. Working with State and Territory governments to improve university governance. This includes university governing bodies having more people with expertise in the business of universities, and a focus on student and staff safety and making sure universities are good employers.
In addition to the five immediate actions, the report identifies more than 70 policy ideas the Accord Panel is considering including in their Final Report and it seeks feedback on them.

UTS ALP Club Members have been proudly campaigning for a Yes vote to enshrining an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the Constitution.
The UTS ALP Club supports the Albanese Labor Government’s commitment to implementing the Uluṟu Statement from the Heart in full and we encourage you to be involved in this once-in-a-generation opportunity to advance reconciliation and work towards closing the gap.
If you would like to get involved, please message our page and we will be in touch regarding any opportunities to help secure a Yes vote.
UTS ALP Club is proud to be supporting a Yes vote at the upcoming referendum to enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice in the Constitution.
We have always stood for equality, inclusion, and fairness and are committed to actively campaigning to ensure that all Australians come together to build a stronger, fairer nation.
Thank you to everyone who came to our May Coffee Caucus! Wishing you all the best of luck with your assessments and looking forward to seeing you all next semester!

Happy International Women's Day from the UTS ALP Club💜
Women belong in Parliament!
We celebrate the progress towards gender parity made through legislation like:
🟣Respect@Work,
🟣We Won’t Wait (10 Days Paid Domestic Violence Leave),
🟣the expansion of Paid Parental Leave, and
🟣the creation of a National Women’s Health Advisory Council.
However, Australia remains a far cry from true gender equality.
That’s why we are fighting to elect a Minns Labor Government on March 25, to enact change for women in NSW.
And we are proud to celebrate the incredible women who lead our Club, our Party, and our Future.
Strong Women. May we be them. May we know them. May we raise them.
