Winston my Black dog is all set to join me on the last leg of the Great Dividing Range adventure ride.
This year I am joining up with Maschine Adventure Tours https://maschine.com.au/ starting the last week of July for 10 days of riding from Mackay to the top of Australia (The Tip) and back to Cairns.

The weather is warming up and the cold blooded insects will be starting to move around your home.

Steel frame homes need inspections also.
Even if your home is constructed of steel you will have timber skirtings, door frames and cupboards all of which termites will damage.
Inspections are important to find termite activity but to also point out plumbing problems that can attract termites.
Recently I was at a home where a broken waste pipe was causing a very large wet area in the lawn and the owner was not aware of the problem.
Having a new pair of eyes look over your home can find maintenance that you have been overlooking.

Dry Wood Termites are found in Australia but we rarely come across the species that requires the building to be put under a tent and fumigated.
The reason for fumigation is that theses termites have a colony of a few hundred, meaning a colony could be housed in a picture frame. The termites do not need to be in contact with soil as there is sufficient moisture in the timber for the colony to survive.
They do not make mud shelter tubes and the dry pellets found in the workings, is the processed timber that has passed through the termite.
Note the pile of frass (Pellets) at the base of one of the poles in this video.

We are back at the house were I installed a chemical treated zone to all house piers one month ago.
At the time of treatment we had three Species of termites active.
Nasutitermes Walkeri, Hetrotermes and Coptotermes Brevis a dry wood termites.
Due to the control action of Fipronil no live termites were found.

It is Spring and with Spring comes warm weather that gets all the cold blooded insects excited.
From now on you will be seeing more Cockroach, Spider and Ant activity as the days get warmer and longer.
This is the ideal time of year to have your pest control carried out as the residual spray will be most active when the pests start to arrive and remains for around 6 months.
Most pest control is achieved by putting down a residual spray for the pest to walk over and pick up traces of the chemical that is absorbed through their body.

So why Steel Wool
When you use steel wood to block holes rats and mice are unable to pull the wad of steel wool away from the hole. They just pull strings off steel away.
I you use paper, foam or most other soft products the rodents will just reopen the hole.
Go around your home looking for any way Rodents can enter your home and fill the holes. This could be under your sink where the waste pipe goes through. Where pipes go though walls, water pipes, electrical conduit and airconditioner pipes.

Hope this helps you keep unwanted visitors out of your home.

Do you have noises in your wall or roof this winter?
The most cost effective way to remove those annoying rats or mice is to leave some Rodenticide bait out for them.
To make sure the family and pest are safe the best thing to do is purchase some lockable rodent stations this way your family and pets cannot get into the bait, but rats and mice feel right at home as there is a small chamber in the station that houses the bait and provides a safe zone the rat or mouse.
These stations can be found in the pest control section of the super market.

This is what happens when timber is left on the ground.
Moisture is absorbed into the timber.
Fungal decay starts
Termites are attracted to moist/decaying timber and they start to consume the timber.
When the timbr is lifted up you will not that the termite workers (the all white termites) follow trails.
The Gold Headed termites (Soldiers) go out to protect the workers.
Moral of this story Do Not Leave Timber on the Ground!

Have a termite inspection at least every year as recommended by Australian Standards.
Make sure your inspection company has been around for a few years to have industry experience.
Has professional Indemnity Insurance.
Is not hard selling you to have termite management done. This is a common problem in our industry were people are scared into spending thousands of dollars when making environmental changes around the home maybe all they needed to do.
I have new clients telling me they had a pre purchase pest inspection done and termites were found in a tree stump.
The home had no termite activity was build with physical termite management in place.
They were charged over $3000 and then asked to retreat two years latter.
No chemical control was needed at all, Tree stump should have been removed. Yard would look better and the termite food source would be gone. Treating the stump would only have killed termites that cam into contact with the control agent and the food source would still be in place.

Called out to inspect a home and control termite activity to find 4 species of termites, 3 active and one not..
This home is not a council approved structure so it has many way for termites to gain entry.
Watch this video clip to see two of the 4 species of termites active in the home.
Previous Coptotermes problem inside the home.
Nasutitermes coming up piers and along floor bearers.
Hetrotermes also active on house piers.
Then we have Cryptotermes (drywood termites) active in two house poles.
This is why Australian Standards recommends at least annual termite inspections so termites do not get out of control in your home.

Why termites get into a building.
Have a look at this 2:29Min video and see why termites enter homes.
With just about all termite problems you will find a moisture problem, this can be leaking shower recess, broken dishwasher water hose, hot water service discharge pipe or air conditioner.
Or structural problems as in this shed where a poor window has allowed water to enter building keeping timber wet, this can happen with roof leaks, disconnected down pipes and poor external cladding.
That is why Australian Standards recommends Annual inspections or more frequent inspections.

Carrying on with the termite theme this month.
This home had termites come in due to a gutter leak on an external wall causing water to run into the wall cavity. This kept the wall timber damp and moister moved into the cupboard timbers causing mould to start.
During an inspection you will hear the operator banging your walls, the reason for this is to disturb any termites in the wall cavity. When they are disturbed the soldiers bang their heads against the fluted timber damage, this causes a clicking sound in the timber due to the number of soldiers trying to scare you away.
This habit of termites helps us discover them and apply a control agent.
In this case we have drilled small holes through the timber into were termites are active and pumped a termiticide foam into the fluted timber.
When I returned four weeks latter the activity had ceased.
A termite management plan was then worked out with the owner, in this case the owner opted to install Sentricon Always Active stations to control any termite activity in his yard and home.
