As a makeup artist I work with applying false lashes all the time. In fact, one of the biggest concerns that I have come across is that, women want something more with their lashes, BUT not overpowering or leaves them looking ridiculous. Yup - I said it.

🔍ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀɴʏ ᴋɴᴏᴡɴ ᴄᴏꜱᴍᴇᴛɪᴄꜱ ᴏʀ ᴄᴏꜱᴍᴇᴛɪᴄ ɪɴɢʀᴇᴅɪᴇɴᴛ ᴀʟʟᴇʀɢɪᴇꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀ ʟᴀᴛᴇx ᴀʟʟᴇʀɢʏ?

This is something I always come across, and I think it is very important to share this information with you. When I have you seated in front of me, I always ask these two specific questions.

Here is why I ask these, because I am sure that if you have never encountered these, you will have no idea what the difference is or why it is important that I ask this.

Allergies to cosmetic ingredients are more common than you may think, however as a fun fact, latex allergies only affect 4.3% of the general population as opposed to 1-in-10 women who use cosmetics will develop an allergy at some point in their lifetime. These current numbers are based in Australia. The best part, you don't have to be allergic to any of these, and then that favourite product of yours becomes your biggest nightmare and you have no idea why. Allergies can start at any time.

Allergies can be tricky, especially when they involve everyday items like makeup and latex products. I am basing the information on irritant dermatitis, which is not an immediate allergic reaction. Please note, that reactions can be quite serious and I am not covering those in this post. Usually the symptoms include but not limited to only these:

Delayed hypersensitivity
Hives
Rash
Flaking skin
Blisters
Itchy skin
Swelling
Eye irritation

Have I seen these in person? Yes, most definitely. As someone who is very sensitive to cosmetic ingredients, I can assure you that these can last from a day to months and at times will require medical intervention. So, my word of advice is, pay attention!

Here’s a breakdown to help you understand and manage these allergies effectively.

🧴 Makeup Allergy: And I am covering skin care as well as cosmetic products here. You do your normal skin care or makeup application and you feel a tingle, almost like stinging or burning. You never had this before, it must all have been in your head? Yup, you've thought that?
No. TAKE IT OFF IMMEDIATELY! No product should ever be burning your skin, the results can be disastrous if you are not cautious.
Ever experienced redness, itching, or acne after using your favourite makeup? You are thinking about hormones, what you have eaten, stress, the environment….
Anything but the possibility that it's your cosmetic products.
Think again… You might have a makeup allergy! Reactions can be caused by ingredients like fragrances, preservatives, or dyes found in cosmetics. You can have a reaction to one brand but not others, it varies greatly.

🧤 Latex Allergy: On the other hand, a latex allergy is a reaction to the proteins in natural rubber latex. Common sources include medical gloves, balloons, and elastic bands. Symptoms can range from mild skin irritation to severe breathing difficulties.
Where Latex Hides in Cosmetics:
Latex isn’t just in gloves and balloons—it can also be hidden in your beauty routine! Here’s where you might find latex in cosmetics:
Makeup Sponges: Traditional sponges often contain latex. Be cautious when using them.
Eyelash Glue: Many eyelash adhesives include latex, which helps in bonding but can trigger allergies.
Special Effects Makeup: Liquid latex is popular for creating special effects in makeup, especially for theatrical purposes.
Face Masks: Some peel-off masks use latex for their elasticity.

Diagnosing the Allergy:
👩‍⚕️ Consult a dermatologist or allergist. They can perform tests, like patch testing for makeup allergies or skin prick tests for latex allergies, to pinpoint the exact cause.

Managing Makeup Allergy:
💄 Read Labels: Look for hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products.
🔍 Patch Test: Always test new products on a small skin area before full use.
🚫 Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid ingredients that cause reactions. This includes any cosmetic brands.

Managing Latex Allergy:
⚠️ Avoid Latex: Steer clear of products containing natural rubber latex.
🆔 Medical Alert: Wear a medical alert bracelet for emergencies.
💊 Emergency Prep: Carry antihistamines or an epinephrine auto-injector if you have severe reactions.

Where have you been?????

Have you ever had that feeling, when life needs a reboot, a switch off then on again moment to make all systems work perfectly? The universe has a funny way of making things fall into perfect alignment! This is that reminder for all you Queens out there, this is your moment!! The universe hears you! and best of all, so did I!!!
