It’s been a lovely season here back in Rapa Nui after my last trip to Dubai as part of the international ensemble of for COP28.

I’ve been enjoying my other job as a local tour guide in the island. So many new people & groups, sharing our beautiful natural sites, culture & story.

I had the chance to meet & perform alongside Tokelauan singer / dancer for our show at & on this trip. Olivia is the voice that sings most of the female Moana songs (), she is also daughter of Opetaia Foa’i, leader of renown pacific music group .

It always struck me how close is the language of Tokelau to the Rapa Nui language. This from years ago, when I listened to Te Vaka’s lyrics, also Moana’s lyrics. Olivia’s songs carry the Tokelau language & the closeness to our Rapa Nui language is more than other pacific languages.

Two small, remote & endangered Polynesian islands situated at the extremes of this region, sharing such close connection through language. Wow, ancestros were really masters of the Moana Nui, as a good friend of mine said once, ‘we descend from boss people’ & yes, I agree. ‘We do descend from boss people’.

Mauru uru also to for facilitating these encounters & collaborations amongst artists & custodians of our Pasifika region.

The morning after our performance at with Small Island Big Song 小島大歌 we were up at
5:30am for a mission, planting 1,000 mangroves with the community.

It grew into a jam by me, Sammy & Richard by the sea, and now when we say Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we think about that very lil' forest that grounded us. We can all be the change.

Bass: Richard Mogu(Papua New Guinea), Valiha: Sammy (Madagascar), Percussions: (Taiwan), Calabash: (Mauritus Island), Shakers: 戴曉君 (Taiwan) & dancing of renown Pacific band Te Vaka, who composed the music for Disney+ movie Moana & its undoubtedly the most important & successful band of the Pacific Region!
