Reducing road trauma in North East Victoria, Australia www.roadsafenortheast.com.au www.twitter.com/RoadSafeNE
RoadSafe North East covers the geographical areas of Towong, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Indigo, Alpine and Benalla. In Victoria, there are 24 RoadSafe Community Road Safety Councils made up of volunteers who tackle local road safety issues. Membership often includes local government, police, emergency services business, health and education services and local residents.
isn’t just about riders, it’s about all road users ensuring they know how to drive safely around bikes.
This year, at least 60% of motorcycle fatalities have been multi-vehicle collisions, and failing to give way identified as one of the most common factors.
While riders can do many things to reduce the risk of a crash, there are also simple actions that drivers can take, including:
🏍️ indicating your intention to turn or change lanes well in advance
🏍️ when changing lanes, use mirrors and head checks to make sure blind spots are clear
🏍️ give motorcyclists enough room to manoeuvre
🏍️ make eye contact with riders, so they know they've been seen.

HERE’S SOME TIPS TO HELP GET YOU PEDALLING
Can I cycle that far?
A rough rule of thumb is that most people can cover about 6 kms in half an hour. It might take
some time to build up to the distance you need to cover but in the meantime you’re fitting
physical activity into your daily routine instead of trying to find time to exercise after work.
If you’ve got a long way to travel why not put your bike in the car and just cycle the last bit?
I don’t feel confident cycling on busy roads
Get some cycle training if you think you need it, especially if you haven’t cycled for a long
time.Look into routes that avoid busy roads. A common mistake is to assume that the only route
to work is on the main roads. Check out the many bike paths around Wangaratta.
If anyone from your workplace already cycles your way ask them about the routes they take or
even ask them to bike buddy with you.
My bike isn’t in great condition
If you’re not sure whether your bike is safe, find time to check it over. Take it to a local bike shop
if you’re still not certain. If it’s safe to ride, just give it a go. You can think about whether a better
bike might make it even more enjoyable once you’ve decided to continue cycling to work.
Won’t I arrive at work hot and bothered? Or drenched by the rain?
You may be worried about not having a shower at work, but this shouldn't be a problem, just
take it easy when you cycle in. Cycle gently and give yourself plenty of time – it’s not a race, so
no need to get sweaty. If it’s really dumping it down on the day you planned to try cycling, it’s
fine to put it off until the next dry day.
How do I keep my bike safe?
Getting your bike stolen will seriously ruin your day (and probably your enthusiasm for cycling).
You really do need a good solid D-lock, and think about how and where to lock your bike.
If your workplace doesn’t provide enough cycle parking then maybe suggest they look into this.
Bike parking venues, such as the Wangaratta Bike Hub, are secure places in the heart of the
CBD, where you can lock your bike. All you need is a padlock to secure your bike in the locker.

🚨Operation Nexus kicks off statewise this Thursday the 28th March starting at 12:01am and will continue until 11:59pm on Monday the 1st of April.
We all understand that Easter is a particularly risky time on our roads, with history showing a high incidence of road accidents.
Motorists can expect to see Highway Patrol, State Highway Patrol, Heavy Vehicle Unit, Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section and Public Order Response Team. Police will be getting around in unmarked vehicles as well. So, just because you cannot see us, does not mean we are not there 🚓.
Police will focus on speed, impaired driving, fatigue, driver distraction, and seatbelt non-compliance 🚔.
Our sole aim is your safety. We want you all to enjoy your Easter long weekend, but more importantly, we want you to return safely to your families and friends at the end.
Remember, drive safe, stay safe and enjoy your holidays 🐇
If you’re planning on hopping off for an Easter holiday this long weekend, don’t forget to pack the choccy eggs and hot cross buns.
To discourage any unwelcome visitors while you’re away (Easter bunny excluded of course), remember the following:
✅ Lock all windows and doors
✅ Bring in your bins or get someone else to
✅ Collect any mail, newspapers or magazines from the curb
✅ Ask your friends, family or neighbours to keep an eye on your place
✅ Consider installing timed smart lights, CCTV cameras or an alarm system
✅ Register your absence from home online to let police know you’ll be away. We use this information to contact you, or your emergency contact should there be an incident at your home while you’re away.
