Whether youโre a woo-woo believer or not, a full moon is a special thing to celebrate in the night sky. In my mind, anything that gets us back to appreciating our natural environment, all beyond our control, is beautiful thing.
Symbolically, a full moon marks the passing of a month and with it brings the opportunity to plan, dream and draw inspiration for the month ahead. This doesnโt have to be a spiritual process, just your own ritual or routine of gratefulness and appreciation for our amazing planet and universe and where we stand within it.

Ah Winterโฆ I want to say Iโm a fan but Iโm totally not! ๐ฉ
Iโve noticed that my hate of bleak weather has dramatically increased over the last few years.
Whether itโs because my kids run even crazier when they have to spend more time indoors or because winter always brings with it an array of sickness or whether itโs simply because I miss gardening in my bathers (๐๐) but I hate winter.
I have been more proactive this past week to stop feeling this way though & have been reminding myself to practice what I preach. We canโt control the weather (or the world around us) but we can control our reaction to it.
Here are some things to come back to when youโre feeling the winter blues are taking over your mood - keeping in mind that the way we feel physically has a huge impact on how we feel mentally & vice versa:
๐จ Get outside in the fresh air OR let the fresh air in. A regular flow of fresh air around us is important to keep our mind & body feeling alive & energised.
โ๏ธ Chase the sun & show off some skin. Wearing multiple, thick layers of clothing isnโt always great for our skin & circulation. Plus sunshine & natural light on our skin is important for our bodyโs vitamin D intake which aids with over all mood as well as immune & cellular health. Pick your moments of sunshine and warmth & expose some skin!
๐ชด Remind yourself of the things that you enjoy doing & make sure that youโre actually making time to do them.
๐ซ Replace your water intake with a good quality herbal tea. Many of us donโt drink enough water in winter simply because itโs cold. Fluid demands decrease at this time of year but our body still benefits from hydrating regularly & feels better for it. Lots of herbal teas also have great health benefits too that can assist with winter immunity.
๐ Have something small each day to look forward to & take time to practice feeling grateful in these moments.
๐คธ๐ฟโโ๏ธ Move your body. Exercise in any form is a great way to invigorate the body & mind when weโre feeling flat. Moving increases blood flow & circulation which helps combat stiff winter joints & muscles & also releases endorphins that help to lift a low mood. Just remember that you can always start off in your Ugg boots ๐

It feels like a very long time since Iโve written anything even remotely yoga related but today, on this sunny day, I can be grateful to have this peaceful, calm and grounding practice in my life.
I initially became drawn to yoga because my body and brain began to feel drained and tired from other forms of exercise. The speed and intensity and volume of what I used to do in the Fitness Industry began to suck my energy, not restore it. I absolutely love the process of teaching and encouraging others to move their bodies with joy and Yoga has given me a platform upon which to do just that and to also nourish my own body and mind and energy levels at the same time. I am so grateful to be paid to do what I love.
I am even more grateful to be able to share this with so many beautiful women and men and children - my own amazing two includedโฆ
The role of being a parent is relentless at the best of times. These last few weeks have not been the best of times at my end. I am lucky that my Yoga mat is my work space, it keeps me breathing and afloat when the swell of life gets real ๐

How lucky am I?!
After not being able to work from this place over the last few months Iโd forgotten just how much my environment affects me!
When I set up this space I purposely tried to create a setting that inspired calm. A peaceful, secluded place but one that still allowed for all of the vibrant elements of being outside - garden, fresh air, native birds, natural light. I wanted to create a space that my clients looked forward to walking into and one that made them feel alive and well.
Our surroundings have a huge impact on the way we feel mentally and this is often reflected in our energy levels and over-all mood. Just a few moments in the sunshine with a beautiful view can change our whole perspective on the worldโฆ and our life!
Last week one of my favourite ladies asked me if I get to spend enough time enjoying this beautiful space that I have created. It made me think just how grateful I am to work where I love, in a corridor filled with all of my favourite things.
The last few months have been really challenging having to close these doors but the good vibes are back and so are the amazing people ๐
What does your daily environment look like and does it make you feel good?
If not, what could you do to change that?
Given the amount of time that many of us spend at work, itโs worth investing in a zone that supports our well being, the pay off is hugeโฆ and before you argue with me - there is no such thing as too many plants ๐

Thank you for the opportunity to speak at the West Australian Mental Health Association Closing Ceremony on the topic of ๐ MIND ๐ BODY ๐ ENVIRONMENT ๐ as well as on my own experience of mental health.
There are a lot of broken hearts and flat emotions here in Australia today and while my speech on Friday wasnโt directly about the referendum, it definitely pushes a message that I feel today is so relevant to our mental health management:
In these times and always, find and stick with your community. Those people that get you, understand you and support you through the hard times and everything in between.

I am a 41 year old Aussie, of Ukrainian decent. I am a yoga teacher, a personal trainer, a coach of both adults and children. I am also a very proud mother of my own 2 incredibly intense and wild but beautiful young men.
I am perfectionist, definitely a little OCD, someone that finds moderation at times very hard. I have a huge amount of energy which needs to be channelled into something constructive otherwise it can become hard for me to handle. I am a people pleaser with a big heart, one that is sensitive and easily hurt but I am resilient, optimistic, eternally positive. My cup is always half full.
And I mention all of these things because ultimately, this is who I am and getting to know who I am and truly accepting who I am has been a crucial part of managing my own mental health.
Talking about and working on my mental health is not something new to me. I come from a long line of anxiety and depression sufferers, as many people do - my own experience of both of these coming to a head at the age if 15/16 when I was diagnosed with an eating disorder.
And this is where the idea of โmanagingโ my mental health comes into play because during this time and for many years following my eating disorder, I was convinced that there was something wrong with me. That there were big parts of myself that had to be changed. And, if youโve ever had to try and change a stubborn, ODC perfectionist - thatโs hard work! ๐
But the liberating thing that I have realised (particularly now with my 41 years of wisdom ๐) is that I donโt have to change who I am, those parts of me that can be tricky will always be there. I must learn to manage myself in a way that works for me to be healthy and happy.
And so we come to these 3 areas - mind, body, environment.
I absolutely believe that we need a holistic approach to well-being. An approach where there is a strong connection and interwoven awareness between our mind and body and environment.
Soโฆ
Body. We need our physical health, thereโs no doubt about it. Physical health is so important and my own physical health is invaluable to me. We need to move our bodies and water them and fill them with nutrients and top up their rest and recovery.
But, hereโs the thing:
Without a strong and thriving engine (our mind) it is just so hard to take these positive steps to physical self care. After all, it doesnโt matter how well-oiled a machine our body is, we need our mental health to drive it. A car wonโt run without an engine and neither will we.
And Iโve spent a good part of my life working in an industry (The Fitness Industry) that prides itself on physical health but geez, thatโs hard to achieve without the consideration of mental health too. And my industry is getting there, but I believe it still has a lot of learning and growing to do so itโs a message that I will keep pushing.
Soโฆ
Our mind. This beautiful big thing needs love and kindness and acceptance and inspiration. It needs moments of movement and stimulation and excitement but it also needs stillness and peace and quiet and yes, it needs boredom too. It needs time to ponder and breathe and think. And it needs support. It needs a supportive garden and life in which to thrive.
And so this is where I want to leave you todayโฆ
I truly believe that our surrounding environment is crucial to the self management of our own mental health. The people that we surround ourselves with, the pace of our surroundings and the actual physical environment that we interact within is crucial.
We need sunlight, we need fresh air, we need to go outside. We need to experience the real world, off a screen, off social media, in the flesh.
And we need a community, our own unique and specific group of people and activities that surround us and that we can contribute to to help facilitate the management of our own mental health - face to face, hand to hand, conversation to conversation, hobby to hobby, project to project, hug to hug.
And this is something that I remind myself of in those moments when the challenging parts of me rear up - because that is the honest truth, none of us are happy and sailing smooth all of the time, we all hit bumps in the road and that is normal life, that is mental health for you.
But in those moments when I feel the road is getting hard, I remind myself to seek out what I need to need to grow and thrive. I remove the weeds, the things that trigger me to fall and I seek out those things and those people and those connections that I know form my environmental fertiliser (so to speak), the things and people and connections that help me flourish. And it works, it really works.
I often think back to my great grandmother. The amazingly strong Ukrainian woman of whom I was named after who kept my family together while escaping a war and migrating to Australia in the 40โs. She lost not only her identity and her home but her husband too. She arrived in this country carrying the weight of a lifetime only to feel that there was โsomething wrong with herโ and underwent ECT to treat โthisโ problem.
I compare this to the privilege that I have experienced with regards to my own mental health. Not only have I been seen and heard and individually taken care of, but I have been empowered to seek this out for others and this is something worth celebrating.
So I ask you today to please, continue to celebrate with me. To spread the positive story that mental health can become.
These struggles are a normal part of life and the more we talk and share, the easier they grow. The lesser the burden. The more โfreeโ we all fly ๐๐ฝ๐
