It is with great disappointment that we have to announce the postponement of the NSW Country Development weekend at Wauchope. With the persistent and forecast rain up and down the eastern seaboard the decision to postpone had to be made. We also needed to give parents time to cancel bookings made and associations to organise local games for that weekend.
It is however great news that we had over 80 players registered for this event and it truely goes to show the need and support of more Development programs for Country.

The Pirates Zooka season sadly came to an end on Sunday, our plucky side losing 11-2 to Chiefs Gold, during their grand-final qualifying match on diamond 4.

After tying the game at the bottom of the first, when Jackson hit a leadoff double and was scored from Cailin’s RBI single to right field, we all hoped the intensity of the previous weeks would be there again.

Chiefs, however, took a significant 5-1 lead at the top of the second when their hitters found the gaps and some missed opportunities from the Pirates’ fielders had the side playing catch up again.

Our Pirates were scoreless for the next two innings while Chiefs tacked on 2 and 4 runs respectively for a commanding 11-1 lead.
A positive fourth inning saw a string of singles from our hitters including Jason, Eadie and Ruby’s RBI scoring one run but it was the solid fielding from Chiefs and some unfortunate strike outs that saw the innings and game come to an end.

Our customary consistent hitting was not there on the day with only Jackson, Eadie and Nash getting multiple hits, while Jackson was sensational in the field making 5 outs and assists for the game. Other standout moments included Harry’s great catch in the pitcher’s position and Ben’s lunging grab at first early in the game, while Max and Iggy were very tidy behind the dish, keeping the Chiefs runners from stealing second or third base.

With that wrap it is also an opportunity to say what a pleasure it has been to assist in coaching this wonderful bunch of kids. They came together in early October 2023 and for many it was their first time playing baseball, the thinking person’s game as I like to call it, as there are so many variables and skills required to play it. With our new head coach Kaitlyn at the helm (plus her super dad Mick, there for whatever we needed him for) she quickly gained rapport with the team and slowly but surely, the kids developed their understanding of the game. By the time the play-offs arrived we genuinely believed anything was possible. We had exceeded our expectations to finish second in the regular comp and then to defeat Cardinals in the first playoff game was the stuff of movie endings. Every child contributed throughout the year and as a coaching group we could not have been prouder. A big shout out to our many parents who helped us with coaching and scoring including Jay, Mark and Dave: thank you-thank-thank you!

This team made my heart swell with pride and it was so privileged to be part of the group. We hope to see you all back either in Zooka or Under 12s next season 😊. Coach Doc.
