Marla Dukharan Links Food Insecurity, Climate Change to Colonialism 12/10/2024

Marla Dukharan isn’t one to shy away from hard truths. Widely regarded as the Caribbean’s leading economist, she has built a reputation for her sharp, no-nonsense assessments of the region’s most complex challenges.

She sits down with me to discuss the region’s increasingly severe hurricanes and Caribbean food insecurity, but quickly steers the conversation toward a broader and far more uncomfortable subject.

“Colonization and all its effects are alive and well in the Caribbean,” she says. >>>

Thank you Marla for sharing your valuable insights with me, and for all that you do for the Caribbean region.

Marla Dukharan Links Food Insecurity, Climate Change to Colonialism Economist Marla Dukharan says the Caribbean must break free from its colonial past and reclaim its food sovereignty if it is to withstand the escalating climate crisis.

Africa’s poultry sector is one of the fastest-growing agricultural sectors, with a 10-year growth rate of 40.9%— surpassing the global average of 36.2%.

While the continent currently trails behind in per capita egg consumption, demand is rapidly increasing. For example, in Rwanda, egg consumption grew by 67% between 2010 and 2020, while Ghana attained record high egg production of 51.5 kilotons in 2020. The African egg market is projected to continue expanding, with an expected annual growth rate of 10.10% through 2029.

Happy world egg day!

Africa’s Growing Egg Market Hatches Untapped Benefits Africa's fast-growing poultry sector is driving livelihoods, climate resilience, and Zero Hunger through innovative initiatives and small business models focused on eggs.

These Cancers Are Most Impacted By Dietary Choices 27/08/2024

A recent study by the American Cancer Society (ACS) provides jarring insights into the connection between diet and cancer. While dietary risk factors might statistically appear to play a minor role in overall cancer risk— being linked to 4.2% of all cancer cases and 4.3% of all cancer deaths in the U.S.— their impact on specific types of cancer is far more significant. In fact, unhealthy dietary habits can be linked to up to 35% of certain cancer types.

Case in point: while low dietary fiber may only account for 0.9% of all cancers in women, this risk factor is responsible for a substantial 11.8% of colorectal cancer cases. In men, poor consumption of fruits and vegetables causes just 2% of all cancers, yet it is the primary risk factor behind a staggering 30.7% of laryngeal cancer cases.

Find out which cancers have the strongest link to the food that you eat...

Today, we embarked on a journey to Wiltshire, England, just two hours outside of London, to witness the awe-inspiring Stonehenge, one of the seven wonders of the world. This ancient Stone Circle, perfectly aligned with the sun, was constructed by prehistoric people over 4,000 years ago. Towering at 13 feet high, 7 feet wide, and weighing an astonishing 25 tons each, these monumental stones were somehow transported from Wales, nearly 140 miles away—an incredible feat that continues to baffle archaeologists.
