Chinese New Year celebration 2024 in Barishal
Demand for investment in renewable energy instead of investment in LNG and coal.
Development Organization , Bangladesh Working Group for Ecology and Development- ( ) and Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network ( ) jointly held a demonstration at Kirtankhola river in Barisal on Saturday 10th February to demand investment in instead of LNG and coal on the occasion of Chinese New Year 2024. Organized exhibitions.
The speakers in the discussion said to express gratitude and extend best wishes to China, we, the entire Bangladeshi society, through various initiatives, celebrate Chinese New Year. Chinese investment has been playing an important role for the dynamism of our country's economy for a long time. We are grateful and indebted to you for this. As we love you (China), we are celebrating your "Lunar Year 2024" in such a grand manner, we hope that your hand of cooperation will be extended to us. Some negative aspects of these investments made us think. Human rights violations, environmental damage continue in Chinese invested projects. Some negative aspects of these investments made us think. Human rights violations, environmental damage continue in Chinese invested projects. In addition, the invested debt has to pay for LNG and coal imports and capacity, and the country is slowly turning into a fragile economy.
Already China has decided to transition away from such investments outside their country towards renewable energy. The Chinese New Year, alternatively called Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, holds significant cultural importance in China, marking the most crucial festivity for families and spanning a week of official public holiday. With roots dating back approximately 3,500 years, the festival has seen extensive evolution, with its customs evolving gradually over time.
This aligns with Bangladesh's ambitious objective of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050, as outlined in the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (MCPP). In addition, we are eagerly waiting to see that the Government of the People's Republic of China has taken necessary actions against the human rights violation at project sites (e.g. S.S. Power Limited). We warmly remember the February 2, 2021, letter from the Economic and Commercial Counselor to the Ministry of Finance, in which China pledged to stay away from energy-intensive and highly polluting projects like coal mining and coal-fired power plants. President H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping made a laudable commitment to green and low-carbon energy in his speech to the UN General Assembly on September 21, 2021, reiterating China's position opposing new coal-fired power projects abroad. Thus, we the people of Bangladesh request to this friendly nation of ours that they could increase the investment in renewable energy and scrap fossil fuel investment aligned with their promises.
