Joan Miró (20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist born in Barcelona. Professionally, he was simply known as Joan Miró. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma in 1981.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism but with a personal style, sometimes also veering into Fauvism and Expressionism. He was notable for his interest in the unconscious or the subconscious mind, reflected in his re-creation of the childlike. His difficult-to-classify works also had a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610), an Italian painter, spent most of his artistic life in Rome. In his last four years, he moved around between Naples, Malta, and Sicily until he passed away. Art experts describe his paintings as a mix of realistic views of people's physical and emotional states, with intense use of lighting that had a big impact on Baroque painting.

Caravaggio used close-up observation and a dramatic technique called chiaroscuro, also known as tenebrism. This style made bright light focus on his subjects, creating dark shadows. He often painted powerful moments like violent struggles, torture, and death. Instead of making sketches, he liked to work directly on the canvas with live models, and his inspiring effect on the new Baroque style that emerged from Mannerism was profound.

His impact is clear in the works of artists like Peter Paul Rubens, Jusepe de Ribera, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Rembrandt. Artists strongly influenced by him were called "Caravaggisti" or "Caravagesques," and they were also known as tenebrists or shadowists.

Diego Rivera (December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957) was a well-known Mexican artist. His large paintings on walls, called frescoes, played a huge role in starting the mural movement in art, both in Mexico and around the world.

From 1922 to 1953, Rivera painted these murals in different places like Mexico City, Chapingo, and Cuernavaca in Mexico, and also in San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City in the United States. In 1931, people looked back at all his works in a special show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, even before he finished his 27 big murals in Detroit called the Detroit Industry Murals.

Due to his importance in Mexico's art history, the government of Mexico declared Rivera's works as historic treasures. In 2018, a piece of art by him got sold for the highest price ever in an auction for a Latin American artist.

Édouard Manet (23 January 1832 – 30 April 1883) was a French artist who used to paint in a modern style. He was one of the first artists in the 1800s to paint scenes from everyday life and played a big role in changing art from Realism to Impressionism.

Even though he was born into a rich family with strong political ties, Manet didn't want to follow the expected path of joining the navy. Instead, he got really interested in painting. His early famous paintings, "The Luncheon on the Grass" and "Olympia," created a stir when they were first shown in 1863 and '65. Critics and the Fine Arts Academy didn't like them at first, but soon, other artists thought they were a big deal and a step into this new style called Impressionism.

Even today, these paintings, along with some others, are seen as really important. They're like the starting point of modern art.
