A workshop on “Midwives Role in Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of Hepatitis B” was held on 15 September 2023 at The Daily Star Center, Dhaka. This workshop was organized by the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh (NLFB), in association with The Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) and Bangladesh Midwifery Society - BMS. The chief guest was Prof. Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam, Director, Disease Control and Line Director, Communicable Disease Control (CDC), DGHS. Special Guest was Anna af Ugglas, Technical Midwife, International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), the Netherlands. Prof. Mohamamd Ali, Secretary General, NLFB, Prof. M Anisur Rahman, Joint Secretary General, NLFB, Prof. Sameena Chowdhury, Past President, OGSB, Prof. Saleha Begum Chowdhury, Vice President, OGSB, Faridah Luyiga Mwanje, Advocacy Lead, ICM, Tammim Akter, Vice President, BMS and Zunaid Murshed Paiker, Chief Coordinator, NLFB was present. Prof. Mohammad Ali gave keynote speech titled, “Midwives Role in Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of Hepatitis B”. On his speech he told, about 60% birth take place at home in Bangladesh. Special Guest Anna af Ugglas, appreciated the idea of collaboration with Gynecologists and Midwives Association along with the National Liver Foundation to Bangladesh to focus on the vital issue of PMTCT. Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam, thanked the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh for the must needed initiative. He highlighted the success story of EPI program in Bangladesh and the inclusion of Hepatitis B vaccine on it. He also describes the recent initiatives of the Government for the control of viral hepatitis with the ultimate goal to achieve SDG goals and elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030.

Hepatitis Can't wait Contest for DMC Students The National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK organized hepatitis awareness program and awareness video competition among students of Dhaka Medical College as “Hepatitis Can't wait Contest for DMC Students”. This program was supported by Dhaka Medical College (DMC). Bangladesh Medical Students Society (BMSS) joined as a campaign partner. Events were : 1.The Inauguration Ceremony of “Hepatitis Can’t Wait Contest for DMC Students” & Viral Hepatitis Awareness Seminar held at Shaheed Dr Milon Audiorium, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka on 12 September 2022. 2. "Hepatitis Can't Wait Contest for DMC Students" Prize Giving The prize distribution ceremony of the winners of "Hepatitis Can't Wait Contest for DMC Students" was held at the conference hall of Dhaka Medical College on 17 January 2023. 3. A day-long winning Video Exhibition and Free Hepatitis B & C Testing Program of "Hepatitis Can't Wait Contest for DMC Students" was held at the ‘DMC Bangabandhu Croner’ of Dhaka Medical College on 18 January 2023. First 6 winners of “Hepatitis Can't wait Contest for DMC Students” campaign were given crest and cash prizes. Jerin Tasnim Mim, a student of 75th batch won the 1st place. Certificates were awarded to all 17 participants. Hundreds of DMC students observe the videos and 360 students participated in the Hepatitis B & C Free Testing and 440 students took part in the awareness survey. Report at ATN News on "Reception of Md Reazul Islam, Regional Board Member, SEARO, WHA" We are delighted to inform that, life member of National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh has been elected as Regional Board Member of South East Asia Region (SEARO) of World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA), Geneva. He will represent 28 member organizations of South East Asia Region. Reazul Islam a college teacher at Galachipa, Patuakhali, had hepatitis B diagnosed in 2001 and developed liver cirrhosis in 2009. He underwent liver transplant at BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka on August 6, 2011. Md Reazul Islam was a nominated candidate of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh for Board members of South East Asia Region (SEARO) of WHA. A reception was arranged in his honour at the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh on December 29, 2022. Distinguished participants were Prof Mohammad Ali, Prof.M Anisur Rahman, Dr. Shafiuddin Mahmood Hussain, Dr. Golam Azam, Dr. Hashim Rabbi, Dr. Mahmud Mohammad Sarder & Nabila Jashim Nuha. Dr. Humayun Kabir, liver transplant recipient & former board member SEARO of WHA also joined. Well-wishers and media personnel also attended. Everyone congratulated Md Reazul Islam for being elected board member of SEARO, WHA, and happy to see that he is passing more than 11 years of normal life after the liver transplant in Bangladesh. Altogether wished that being a hepatitis B survivor he will play an active role in the world body for viral hepatitis prevention & control. Md Reazul Islam thanked the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh for nominating him. He also expressed gratitude to the Liver Transplant team of BIRDEM General Hospital for his successful liver transplant in 2011. He possesses high expectations to work in viral hepatitis control.

Remembering Prof. Mirza Mazharul Islam, on his 2nd death anniversary (October 11,2020) with great respect & honor. The legendary surgeon, teacher of most surgeons of Bangladesh. A benevolent, kind hearted man with generous personality, which is unparallel. Had great love & respect for the patients. He used to work tirelessly, performing maximum number of surgeries so that the suffering of mass people gets relieved at the earliest possible time. He was a good academician, loved for teaching students so that they can learn maximum to build their carrier in the right way. He had a great love for the nation, a Language Movement Veteran & Ekushey Padak Winner. Prof. Mirza Mazharul Islam, who inspired me to be a surgeon & actively guided me in every step of my academic carrier. He had active role in starting Hepato- Biliary- Pancreatic Surgery & initiation of Liver transplant in Bangladesh at BIRDEM General Hospital. Heavy heartedly recalling Prof. Mirza Mazharul Islam, the legendary Surgeon of Bangladesh, Language movement Veteran & Ekushey Padak Winner on his 2nd death anniversary (October 11,2020). Prof. Mirza Mazharul Islam encouraged me to make my carrier as a surgeon, which I started with him at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in 1977. He wholeheartedly guided me. His position to me as a beloved father. His driving force in every aspect of my life & carrier makes me successful in initiating Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery & Liver transplant in Bangladesh. He was Hon. Life member & Advisor of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh since its inception. Actively engaged in the events starting from the awareness rallies on viral hepatitis in the roads to the chairperson over the stage. The nation lost a beloved teacher of most of the teachers in the surgical profession of Bangladesh. I lost my best mentor in the world. Praying for the salvation of the departed soul. We wholeheartedly remember, the smiling gesture of Advocate Mahbubey Alam, who left us forever on this day (September 27, 2020).
