Today the US honors Juneteenth as a federal holiday due in major part to @therealopallee! One of Lee’s greatest achievements is her continued support for the celebration of the Juneteenth holiday earning her the nickname “Grandmother of Juneteenth”. She has promoted the idea by leading 2.5 miles (4.0 km) walks each year, representing the 2.5 years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas. We celebrate Ms. Lee for all of her efforts and drive to make this a federal holiday! We also celebrate our ancestors, for their strength, tenacity and fight to be given what they were born with, FREEDOM.
