চারু ও কারু দুটি ভিন্ন প্রকৃতির শিল্প। রঙতুলির সাহায্যে নির্মিত চিত্রকলা ও সুই সুতার সাহায্যে নির্মিত সূচিশিল্প চারুশিল্পের অন্তর্গত; আর মৃৎশিল্প, দারুশিল্প, বস্ত্রশিল্প, বাঁশ-বেত-শোলা-শঙ্খ-দন্ত নির্মিত বিবিধ হস্তশিল্প এবং সোনা-রূপা-পিতল নির্মিত ধাতবশিল্প কারুশিল্পের অন্তর্গত। তবে কতক লোকশিল্প আছে যেগুলিকে এভাবে বিভাজন করা যায় না, যেমন: সখের হাঁড়ি, মনসাঘট, লক্ষ্মীর সরা এগুলি একাধারে চারু ও কারুশিল্পের নিদর্শন বহন করে। মাটির তৈরী সাধারণ হাঁড়ির গায়ে রঙতুলি দিয়ে মাছ, পাতা কিংবা রেখাদির চিত্র অঙ্কিত হলে তখন তাকে সখের হাঁড়ি বলে। নকশি পাটি বুননশিল্প; এতে রঙ-বেরঙের বেত দিয়ে বুনন কৌশলে গাছ, পাখি, মসজিদ ইত্যাদির ছবি ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়। এ কারণে নকশি পাটিও চারু ও কারুশিল্পের সমন্বিত নিদর্শনরূপে গণ্য হয়।
