This guidance likely stands out as the most valuable advice for students pursuing Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)...
---------------------******---------------------

I will try to provide you a brief overview of some of the things many good students in good institutes do. You can then decide for yourselves, what is good to be done.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 isn’t devoted 100% to electrical engineering, rather, only about 20% of the coursework has anything to do with electrical. But that does not mean you neglect other subjects- you have your own marks/GPA/CPI and future to think about. What is important is, start developing a bond with electrical engineering as soon as you start learning the course. In the first year, most courses teach basics of electrical networks, circuit theorems, basic electronic devices, and introduction to electrical machines (motors, transformers etc.).

Do a small summer project after your first year. Does your institute have an electronics society? Or an IEEE student chapter? If so, enrol in it, and participate in regular workshops. There will be circuit design workshops, coding and embedded (microcontroller) workshops which will introduce you to more platforms in electronics. Don’t be scared that you won’t be able to do much. Pair up with a senior and work. Most importantly, learn!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 is when mainstream electrical courses are started to be taught. I find that this is the time when there is a strong association of mathematics with electrical, and there are co-dependencies. Focus on your Math courses. You will use a number of these concepts in electrical, including, but not limited to- Laplace and Fourier’s theorems, Complex analysis, vector calculus and a bit of linear matrix algebra. A number of these will form basis for future courses.

In the summer after the second year, talk to a professor whose research area you might like. Alternatively, a prof who has been teaching you consistently well for you to develop an interest in the field. See if he/she is willing to guide you for a small summer project. This one is now a more serious one! There may be small amounts of research involved, which will mould your thinking skills in the field. Hunting for literature, reviewing them and summarizing are monumental tasks. Chances are that you won’t appreciate much, but talk to your prof and his/her senior students. They will inculcate this habit in you.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, along with regular courses, may have optional lab courses which are project/development oriented. Take up such a course. There is no substitute for hands-on working, and developing a system using the concepts you’ve learned so far, and also those you’ve not yet learned! System design, problem identification and troubleshooting skills are invaluable and will help you consolidate your profile as a practical engineer. Come out of theory and get your hands dirty!

During the third year, try for internships during the approaching summer thereafter. If you want to work in the electrical industry, talk to companies in the field. If your college has a placement cell, ask them for possible contacts to companies for internships. If you foresee an academic career ahead (higher study or research), applying as a summer research fellow to any good university isn’t a bad idea! Expect this summer to be really busy and application oriented, for a period of around 1–2 months.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, there may be elective courses. Choose wisely. Differentiate between easy options versus the ones which you expect will help your future, versus the ones which really interest you. This is the best time to make a complete profile for yourself. Take up your final thesis project under a professor in the field you wish to carry on. Circuits, systems, communication, power electronics? Take your pick. Ensure you have a good subject base in the appropriate area to maximize the outcome of your project.

Rest is up to you- sit for placements if you wish, else prepare yourself for competitive examinations like GATE or GRE for higher study. Believe in yourself, do good work, and you’ll do well.
All the best!
