১৯৪৮ সালে পাকিস্তান সরকার ঘোষণা করে- উর্দুই হবে আমাদের মাতৃভাষা। এ ঘোষণা শুনে সারাদেশে উঠলো প্রতিবাদের ঝড়। মায়ের ভাষা বাংলা ছেড়ে উর্দু! না কোনমতেই মেনে নেয়া যাবে না। চলতে থাকলো এই সিদ্ধান্তের বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন।
১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি সকল পুলিশি বাঁধা অমান্য করে রাজপথে নেমে আসলো ছাত্রসমাজ, ভাঙলো ১৪৪ ধারা! মিছিল থামাতে পুলিশ চালালো গুলি।রাজপথ ভেসে গেলো সালাম, রফিক, বরকতসহ অজস্র যুবকের রক্তে। এই অকুতোভয় সাহসের কাছে মাথা নোয়ালো শাসক গোষ্ঠি, বাংলা এবং বাংলাই হলো আমাদের মাতৃভাষা। রক্তের দামে আমরা পেলাম মায়ের ভাষায় কথা বলার অধিকার । তারই পথ ধরে সারা বিশ্বে একুশ পেলো আলাদা নাম, পেলো আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের সম্মান।
