World Trauma Day
Living after experiencing a traumatic event leaves a person bleeding; oftentimes mentally and sometimes physically. To build awareness about the reasons, signs, and impacts of trauma as well as prepare people about how to prevent and manage trauma, World Trauma Day is observed worldwide, on October 17 every year. Since 2011, this day has been celebrated emphasizing the significance of saving lives during emergencies.
In general, trauma indicates a response or reaction to disturbing events which covers both physical injuries and other hurtful experiences not related to physical wounds. Trauma is, defined by American Psychological Association (APA), “an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, r**e, or natural disaster.” Still and all, people can experience trauma as a response to any formidable and painful occurrence including combat exposure, loss of a loved one, domestic violence, and the list goes on.
Trauma makes a gigantic impact, which is completely negative, on a person's mind, and as a result, his or her psychological well-being gets challenged. Emotional response to trauma incorporates confusion, depression, tiredness, anxiety, agitation, nightmares, and physical problems like headache and shaking or trembling. When the trauma is not treated for a long time, trauma survivors often seem to develop different kinds of mental disorders. The most common trauma-driven disorder is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Other trauma disorders the survivors get diagnosed with most of the time are Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), etc.
Fortunately, there is hope for the trauma survivors. Mental health professionals utilize some established psychotherapy methods such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) to take care of survivors of trauma.
In the treatment of trauma-related issues, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987, is now being considered most effective and useful by mental health experts as the therapy increases the ability of trauma survivors' brain to cope better with distressing thoughts by making them experience discontinuous eye movements. Based on the Adaptive Information Processing model (AIP), EMDR therapy enables the person to process traumatic memories in order to resolve the arousal of negative emotions.
In Bangladesh, there is also hope and help for trauma survivors who are struggling with different mental health issues. The EMDR Bangladesh Association, formally established in March 2019, has been providing EMDR therapy for trauma survivors and bringing hope for a new beginning in their lives. The members of the association are internationally trained trauma therapists and highly efficient in providing trauma-informed care. Along with serving treatment to trauma survivors, the association takes part in international EMDR conferences and arranges imperative training on EMDR therapy to ensure the incessant improvement of the quality of EMDR practice in the country. Thus, it tries to keep helping people who are suffering from trauma-caused mental health problems, and to date, a bunch of people found a way to get out of the darkness with the treatment of the members of the EMDR Bangladesh Association.
