Topic: Tense shifts

As students, we've always been taught to avoid tense changes in our writing. While unnecessary tense shifts should be avoided, it becomes crucial at times to change tense in a paragraph so that we can indicate the change in the timeframe of an action.

Example:

"Although my grandmother's house was only a ten minute drive from ours, I was terrified to go by myself. I THOUGHT my feelings may have been affected by the stereotypes about Dhaka city after dark."

"Although my grandmother's house was only a ten minute drive from ours, I was terrified to go by myself. I THINK my feelings may have been affected by the stereotypes about Dhaka city after dark."

(The tense change has been shown by the use of capital letters)

This tense shift in the second paragraph shows the change in the timeframe of the action of 'thinking.'

Explanation:

In the first paragraph, it sounds like the subject was reflecting during her car ride. However, in the second paragraph, the subject is looking back at her car ride and reflecting in the present!
