The Tsonga people, a group primarily residing in Southern Africa, notably in regions of South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, have a rich cultural heritage that includes various forms of artistic expression. In the 19th century, the Tsonga community was known for their remarkable craftsmanship in crafting staffs, a significant element of their cultural and artistic identity.
The staffs created by the Tsonga were not merely utilitarian tools but held deep cultural and symbolic significance. Crafted from wood and adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements, these staffs were a representation of status, power, and identity within the Tsonga society.
Each staff was meticulously carved with symbolic motifs and patterns that conveyed the individual's social standing, lineage, or achievements. Some staffs were ornately decorated with depictions of animals, geometric designs, or human figures, symbolizing various aspects of the Tsonga people's beliefs, traditions, and history.
Here, we have a cane carved in wood that presents a female anthropomorphic handle. The inspiration seems Western; she wears a fitted dress and underlined by a belt and a hat, perhaps a boater. Her hands are clasped before her. Below it is an engraving of a baby, bearing a cross on the chest (often related to protection such as an amulet or talisman). An oval surrounds this baby, as if in a cradle. We find this engraving on both sides of the cane. The cane has a beautiful patina that makes it glow in the light.
Although it is now impossible for us to reconstruct the exact context in which these objects were produced, we know that they have attracted collectors of such scepters from the early days. Some were exhibited in Europe as early as 1907, and classified under the category of 'Native Arts.'
Find this item at the Sotheby's Paris sale on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

These 18th century jars belong to a large group of ceramic wares very popular during the Qajar dynasty, which illustrate the development of the blue-and-white style; its shape, originating in Mamluk Syria, was adopted in China and in Safavid Persia. Used for the storage of food, including olive oil, they are particular due to the underglaze staining and the particular smell they have retained to this day. In the twentieth century, such jars were occasionally turned into lamp bases, as the perforation and the groove for electrical wire on the bottom appear to suggest.
The Safavid dynasty, led by Safi al-Din Ardabili, gained influence through religion and alliances. Its peak under Hodja Ali was followed by conflicts with neighboring powers. Shah Isma'il revived the dynasty briefly. They ruled a vast realm but Selim I's victory shifted their fate. A succession of rulers ended with Nadir Shah in 1737. Their legacy includes architectural wonders like Jihil Sütun palace and Masjid-i Shah mosque.
The Qajar dynasty ruled Persia (Iran), Georgia and Armenia (1785-1925), originating from Turkoman near Astarabad. They modernized Iran with technology and arts. Despite a legacy of tribal divisions, Qajars centralized Iran, embracing innovation. Photography, lithography, and new art forms thrived. They invoked Safavid glory. Agha Mohammad Shah's rule marked consolidation against Zands. Fath 'Ali Shah (1797-1834) worked on imperial image, faced Russo-Persian wars. Naser al-Din Shah (1848-96) modernized Tehran and implemented reforms. Mozaffar al-Din Shah (1896-1906) introduced Majles and a constitution. Mohammad Ali Shah's coup failed; Ahmad Shah (1909-25) dealt with foreign interventions and occupation, leading to his deposition. Reza Khan's 1921 coup ended the Qajar era.
