Our industry is leading the shift to a competitive EU bioeconomy. Check out what Sappi Europe’s CEO and Cepi chair Marco Eikelenboom and Sappi Europe’s Director Sustainability and 4evergreen alliance chair Sarah Price have been up to this month. Given Europe’s ambitious agenda for sustainable competitiveness, it is critical that wood fibre is recognised as a strategic resource and material in EU. 🔁 At the PRIMA Conference, Marco outlined the industry’s key opportunities and risks amid EU's dynamic legislative and regulatory landscape. The need for an EU Industrial Deal is clearer than ever, especially given Draghi's recent report which emphasises EU's "innovation gap" and the call to action on decarbonisation, competitiveness and resilience. 🔁 Sarah joined the Specialty Papers Europe 2024 conference, and in a panel session, she discussed the opportunity that the ‘PPWR’ regulation presents for fibre-based packaging to be recognised for its circularity. She said: ‘It’s essential that the industry is involved in the development of secondary legislation, where Design for Recyclability criteria and many other details will be developed.’ 🔁 In her role as Chair of the 4evergreen alliance, Sarah also moderated the online webinar ‘Unlocking the toolbox to perfect fibre-based packaging circularity’. The group discussed the design recommendations of packaging and the challenges and solutions for assessing recyclability using 4evergreen’s Circularity by Design Guideline and Recyclability Evaluation Protocol – tools for fibre packaging circularity. Sappi Europe is focused on delivering solutions for accelerating the circular economy, and we’re incredibly proud to play our part in forging a sustainable and thriving future for our industry. #sappi #circulareconomy #pulpandpaperindustry

We all know that successful safety is a team effort – it takes the efforts of every employee to make a workplace truly safe. So we asked a few of our colleagues – Jessica Bergner, Kamuran Ylmaz, Mika Elonsalo, Jan Hofmann and Joachim Junge – how they live up to that responsibility. What does safety mean to them? But what do you think? What does safety mean to you? #safetyfirst #healthandsafety #sappi

🌠 We are pleased to share a significant milestone achieved at our Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland: we’ve reduced the carbon footprint of our Galerie papers range by 55%, which is expected to reach 70% by the end of 2024. This is a key step forward and a major milestone in our sustainability journey. We made significant investments to bring renewable energy and clean electricity to the mill. The knock-on effects, for our own Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been enormous, but the positive effects also support our customers’ own efforts to decrease their emissions. Here’s what Sarah Price, Sappi Europe’s Director of Sustainability has to say: “For us, this is much broader than emissions; it’s about investing now for long-term positive change and enabling our customers to do the same.” Read more about the announcement here: https://ow.ly/eNS650SI5xG #SappiEurope #Sustainability #PaperIndustry

How can we create a circular economy? 🤔 We all know that less “take, make, waste” and more “reduce, reuse, recycle” would be good for all of us – and the environment. But what concrete steps can we take to help to create a circular economy? At Sappi, making what we should, not just what we can – from woodfibre-based renewable resources – is central to how we run our business. So, we asked our colleagues – Gustavo Duarte (Head of Business Development), Lasse Lerche (Sales and Technical Customer Service Manager), Georgiana Marin (Sales Manager) and Bram Goorts (Manager Power Plant and Waste Water Treatment) – to tell us what was key to them in creating a circular economy. Tell us – what is key for you? #circulareconomy #Sustainability #sappi
