According to research from the Max Planck Institute, plastics can interfere with antibiotic activity. Tetracycline-sensitive cell lines cultured with micro- and nanoplastic particles found that the biological activity of the antibiotic drops in the presence of plastics, which has implications for antibiotic resistance.

According to University of Oxford researchers, freshwater bdelloid rotifers can turn on genes they acquire from bacteria when exposed to fungal infection. These tiny invertebrate teachers could provide clues for how to make antibiotics that are less toxic to animals including humans.
