Genes stolen by microscopic freshwater animals can be used to make new antimicrobials to protect themselves against fungi. According to University of Oxford researchers, freshwater bdelloid rotifers can turn on genes they acquire from bacteria when exposed to fungal infection. These tiny invertebrate teachers could provide clues for how to make antibiotics that are less toxic to animals including humans.
