The original song, out today, produced by longtime collaborator Pierre Guerineau, is a cathartic response to power dynamics within the music industry. The rawness of the original is complemented by a new version by Soulwax, coming out on April 3rd..

I’ve been sitting on this for a while and have been eagerly waiting to share it with you. This song talks about passion & authenticity. It’s not nice, it’s real. Bolis Pupul shares new single MA TAU WAI ROAD (with Salah Pupul)

Taken from his debut album LETTER TO YU out March 8th

"I wrote this song in a hotel room just around the corner of my mother’s birthplace on Ma Tau Wai Road in 2019. It’s a song about gratitude and regret, two feelings that go hand in hand when I’m in Hong Kong. Back in Belgium I asked my sister Salah Pupul if she wanted to sing this song. Besides being a great visual artist she is also a very talented singer with whom I’ve made a lot music in the past. �Prior to the recording session she had never been to Hong Kong, but when we decided to make a video for Ma Tau Wai Road, I wanted to film her being a small part of this giant city.

I enjoyed every minute with my sister in Hong Kong, mirroring each other since we were kids. Made with lots of love and compassion dedicated to our beloved mother Yu Wei Wun"

"I discovered this dish the first time I was in Hong Kong. Blown away by this flavour bomb I decided to use this experience and translate it into a musical journey.

Ascending arpeggio’s illustrate the uninterrupted flavours that keep returning once you take your first bite, these repetitions are all held together by the soft nature of the crab’s meat, like a melody that bounces off on different chords. Once you think you had it all you get hit by these crunchy hot chilies that run straight to your brain and sent you into ecstasies. Time to cool down and have a break, but then it starts all over again.

Bolis Pupul COMPLETELY HALF

"I wrote this song the very first time I went to Hong Kong in 2018. My late mother, Wei Wun Yu was born there but we never visited this vibrant place together. As I wandered through neighbourhoods, her presence was always there, I would see her for a split second before realising it wasn’t her and she’d vanish again. The feeling that we are all connected and we can see ourselves in each other; a state of inter-being was a sad but also comforting thought.

Together with director Bieke Depoorter I went back to Hong Kong once more. She was sensitive towards my relationship with this city, how I wanted to connect with people, what this journey meant to me and how this translated into my music.

Bolis Pupul announces debut solo album LETTER TO YU, coming out March 4th 2024.

First single COMPLETELY HALF, built around field recordings on the Hong Kong subway, has been beautifully filmed in an art-house style by Magnum photographer Bieke Depoorter in the heart of Hong Kong, who follows Bolis exploring its streets and buildings in search for his late mother. The women in the video welcomed Bieke into their homes and daily routines to let her film intricately composed tableaux of their everyday lives, in which Bolis seeks the spirit of his late mother. First single COMPLETELY HALF will be released at 7PM UK today, alongside a music video shot in Hong Kong by Boris and Bieke Depoorter of Magnum Photos. You can pre-order the LP/CD now via the link in bio.

Boris writes:
"It’s been a long journey that started in 2018 when I visited Hong Kong for the first time. Although I had never been to HK, some things felt familiar. This was the place where my late mother was born, and I felt very sad being there without her. At the same time, I felt her presence very close to me.

On the first day I arrived in the city, I visited the street where she was born and wrote her a letter. This letter became the centerpiece of my record. 'Letter To Yu' is a homage to my mother, my grandparents, and Hong Kong.

Special thanks to Stephen and David Dewaele for supporting me and being with me along this journey, guiding me on this very special album”
