Are palatal rugae reliable markers for 3D superimposition and forensic human identification after palatal expansion? A systematic review 18/09/2023

The article “Are palatal rugae reliable markers for 3D superimposition and forensic human identification after palatal expansion? A systematic review” of our research group was newly published in Forensic Science International.

Congratulations to Marco Farronato, Dr. Giacomo Begnoni, Laura De Boodt, Prof. Dr. Patrick Thevissen and Prof. Dr. Guy Willems and Prof. Dr. Maria Cadenas de Llano.

This review collected the current evidence regarding whether orthodontic palatal expansion could affect the stability of the palatal rugae and gave preliminary guidelines. The review concluded that the morphology of the palatal rugae can be modified by palatal expansion techniques, especially by rapid maxillary expansion. The first rugae is the most stable along with the points close to the palatal midline, which should be used as a reference both for manual or semi-automatic superimpositions. Human identification and serial superimpositions based on palatal rugae should not be carried immediately post expansion and be taken in consideration with caution in patients who underwent prior palatal expansion.

We are very pleased to announce the article “Relation between Maximum Oral Muscle Pressure and Dentoalveolar Characteristics in Patients with Cleft Lip and/or Palate: A Prospective Comparative Study” by our research group was newly published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine (IF=3.9).

Congratulations to Lisa van Geneugden, Anna Verdonck, Prof. Dr. Guy Willems, Prof. Dr. Greet Hens and Prof. Dr. Maria Cadenas de Llano,

This study Patients with cleft lip and/or palate did not present reduced maximum oral muscle pressure compared with patients without this condition. An imbalance favoring the tongue (the tongue pressure is greater than the lip pressure) was found in both patients with and without clefts. Patients with CP and UCLP with a larger transversal maxillary width presented systematically higher imbalance scores (favoring the tongue) than those with narrow maxillae. Therefore, the influence of slow maxillary expansion on maximum oral muscle pressure in cleft patients should not be underestimated. It is important for cleft teams to take these myofunctional aspects into consideration in the treatment of patients with cleft lip and/or palate, especially regarding orthodontic treatment planning.

We are very pleased to announce the article “Performance of the Malmgren Index for Assessing Root Resorption on 2D vs. 3D Radiographs: A Pilot Study” by our research group was newly published in the Healthcare.

Congratulations to Hanne Michielsens, Julie Decreus, Dr. Giacomo Begnoni, Prof. Dr. Anna Verdonck, Prof. Dr. Reinhilde Jacobs, Prof. Dr. Guy Willems and Prof. Dr. Maria Cadenas de Llano-Pérula.

This study compared the performance of the Malmgren index on 2D and 3D radiographs. results showed the original Malmgren index is not suited for 3D images, especially axial, where using dichotomized values (resorption yes/no) leads to overestimation of RR. A low-dose CBCT of the upper incisors could detect RR with high diagnostic accuracy in the early stages of orthodontic treatment, especially in patients with dental trauma or familial RR history.

We are very pleased to announce the article “Early prevention of maxillary canine impaction: a randomized clinical trial.” by our research group was newly published in the European Journal of Orthodontics.

Congratulations to Prof. Dr. Guy Willems, Charlotte Butaye, Margot Raes, Dr. Chen Zong, Dr. Giacomo Begnoni, and Prof. Dr. Maria Cadenas de Llano.

This study investigated the effect of three interceptive measures (1) slow maxillary expansion (SME) with removable plates, (2) extraction of both upper deciduous canines (DC) and (3) no intervention on maxillary canine position in patients with early mixed dentition and lack of upper arch space. Results showed that early SME improves the canine sector and reduces the need for major orthodontic intervention in the long term. Taking a first panoramic radiograph in EMD allows timely intervention in case of maxillary canine impaction.

The article “Third molar position after completion of orthodontic treatment: a prospective follow-up” of our research group was newly published in the Dentomaxillofacial Radiology.

Congratulations to Charlotte Butaye, Annelie Miclotte, Dr. Giacomo Begnoni, Zuodong Zhao, Chen Zong and Prof. Dr. Guy Willems, Prof. Dr. Anna Verdonck, Prof. Dr. Reinhilde Jacobs, Prof. Dr. Maria Cadenas de Llano.

This article analyzed the changes in the third molar position after completion of 2 different types of orthodontic treatment: non-extraction treatment with cervical headgear vs without cervical headgear and first or second premolar extractions compared to a non-extraction group. Our research group found out that the use of cervical headgear increased upper third molar uprighting 3 years after debonding, while little changes in third molar position were found after orthodontic treatment with extractions. However, 2nd premolar extractions led to larger retromolar spaces and better third molar angulation in the long term.

We are very pleased to announce our latest article “Long-term effects of orthodontic interceptive expansion treatment” published in the Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics / Fortschritte der Kieferorthopädie.

As is known that interceptive orthodontic treatment is a good way to prevent the development of malocclusion and to correct occlusal discrepancies. However, the skeletal and long-term effects of these interventions, scientific evidence is still lacking. This retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the long-term effects of interceptive treatment with a removable expansion plate in the early mixed dentition phase. We discovered that a removable expansion plate is a treatment option for successfully and steadily correcting crossbites and increasing intermolar width in patients who are sent to orthodontists throughout the mixed dentition phase. Recently our department published an article in Clinical Oral Investigation. In this study efforts were made to investigate the effect of age and diet consistency on the maximum perioral muscle pressure in orthodontically treated and untreated subjects with normal occlusion. This was followed by finding whether there is a muscle imbalance between the anterior tongue and lip pressure in the same subjects. Finally, the age and sex-specific 3D facial morphology of orthodontically treated and untreated individuals with normal occlusion were compared using the non-rigid registration technique.
