Na de premiere/seizoensopener van Dimitri Leue met de ravissante Tine Embrechts, altijd uitstekende Antoon Offeciers, en ander schoon volk, speelt ik ten dans in De Klap - ze nu niet dat ik het niet gezegd heb.

25 years! This album was a game changer for me. Conceptually way ahead, without losing one inch of its musicality, admosphere and groove. Being political and DIY in this way was so refreshing, and turned me in a fan for life. The cd version came with a CD-ROM (now an ancient history format) packed with goodies and a little bit of soft called Vjamm. It proved to be my VJ weapon of choice for many years, turning me in a AV chopster on many gigs and parties . So when Matt black from Coldcut mailed me if he could use one of my AV remixes (a BoC track with vintage skate footage), I was pretty proud, to say the least. This release was a creative atomic bomb, turning so many bedroom playa's into confident creators. And I was just one of them. THX AND RESPECT.

This one is for all them O(+> fans out there. We miss him so hard. We can't stand the fact we will never ever see a concert (or an afterparty!) again. And this mixtape ain't gonna make it better. There's not a single prince track on it! Still, listen to it, with the maestro in mind. Feel his inspiration in lesser gods, even mere mortal musicians. Imagine what it would sound like if he covered these songs.
Although I didn't want to make the obvious choices like Candie Dulfer, The bangles, Sly, JB, or Santana, the selection does contain a few usual suspects: Kravitz, Lidell, Sade, Clinton with a very special version of Georgia on my mind.
His Purple Badness was at his best creating near perfect pop songs with a weird twist, and this mix focuses most on these kind of tracks. I had to add Beck because he can't really rap, and Prince was amazing at everything, but a lousy mc! Ween's pretty weird as it gets, and a bit further you find Arthur Russell - the man elevated weirdness to a new standard. Btw, who remembers Terence Trent D'arby? A prince rip-off, yes, but this track is pop gold, to my standards.
More pop songs I adore from more white people made the cut: The whitest boy alive(!), Khruangbin (technically they are mixed), and a funk jam from The B-boys. Prince was criticised for playing too "white". For a someone who lived only for music, the man was colour blind - except for purple 😉.
I couldn't choose between 2 Moodymann tracks, so I ended up using them both. Moodymann is a true heir of prince, taking his magic into Detroit house like no-one else does. Originality is something Prince was always striving for: Moodymann, Arthur Russell, Ween, Feist: all of them strike me as very original artists.
Prince never talked much about his influences, but we all know he had a deep respect for Miles Davis as he was exploring jazz at a later age. And I had to close with my favourite Joni: The urge for going. Prince went, way too early in human years. But If you take in mind the body of work he leaves behind, combined with his relentless touring, the man lived at least 3 lives. We are left with his vault - and have been spoiled with the sign'o'theTimes extravaganza or the originals release. More is coming, but for now, enjoy his hand in this eclectic mix, enjoy the sun, dance, love! and stay hydrated.
