Happy Birthday to The Pencil of Nature.
(Larry J. Schaaf)
"On this day, June 24th in 1844, William Henry Fox Talbot upended centuries of tradition in book illustration. In issuing the opening fascicle of The Pencil of Nature, he took the first faltering but bold steps towards forever changing the way that we would produce and view books. This pioneering publication more than anything else demonstrated his far reaching vision and profound understanding of the implications of the art that he had conceived of on the shores of Lake Como in the autumn of 1833. Just eleven years later Henry Talbot had evolved from suffering as a frustrated draughtsman to being a publishing visionary. His influence on the world of books was to become so pervasive that most often we do not even perceive it today."

Today we commemorate 80 years of D-Day.
Very few wartime photos show the terror and violence of air war with such expression.

A haunting image of a Liberator bomber, hit by German anti-aircraft fire. The B-24 Liberator bomber, nicknamed “Blue I” was shot down during a raid on the IG Farben chemical complex in the town of Blechhammer. The plant in Blechhammer was one of the most protected targets in Europe.

A fascinating astro photograph of the eclipse of April 17, 1912 in Paris.
The typical glass positive of “Vérascope Richard” isn’t used as a stereo image. The solar eclipse is visible on the left. On the right the photographic setup with the telescope.
Technical information about the image is written in blue pen on the glass plate between the images.
Historical detail about this solar eclipse:
Eugène Atget photographed a crowd gathering at the Place de la Bastille in Paris on April 17, 1912, using viewing equipment to observe a solar eclipse. A famous image used on the cover of La Révolution Surréaliste.
