▪ Trifon Zarezan - the holiday of the wine-growers, inn-keepers and gardeners
On February 14, Bulgarians celebrate Saint Trifon the Pruner, the patron saint of vine-growers and wine-producers whose pruning shears are the symbol of wine and fertility in Bulgaria. The old custom dictates that a bread and a hen filled with rice and bulgur is prepared. The men of the village then take food and a jar of wine and go to the vineyard. There they perform a fertility rite for the land which includes taking a few branches and pouring wine in the ground. This ritual is called Zarezvane, where the name Zarezan comes from.

Ruins of the late antique basilica of the Holy Mother of God, known today as the Red Church of Perushtitsa
The Red Church is a large, partially preserved late Roman Christian basilica of Byzantine architecture, built in the IV or at the latest until the beginning of the VI century during the reign of Emperor Anastasius I. The Red Church is certainly one of the oldest churches in Europe. Immediately after the convening of the Ecumenical Council in Serdica in 343, the construction of cult buildings began throughout Thrace, among which there were those designed to preserve the memory of the martyrs who died for the establishment of Christianity. The temple was dedicated to the Holy Mother of God. The "Red Church" got its name because of the typical Roman bricks and pink mortar from which it was built. the church stands near the town of Perushtitsa in western Plovdiv Province, some 15 kilometres southwest of the city of Plovdiv.
