The Brazilian National Steel Day was created as a tribute to one of the most important materials for the development of today's societies. Since the Iron Age, men have found new ways to use this element in various applications, making daily life easier.

Nowadays, steel plays a central role in the global value chain and global trade. About ⅓ of steel production in the world is globally traded, with around 300 million tons of steel being traded indirectly in the form of other goods such as cars.

The transformation of steel became a key process for the development of other industries, in different sectors of the economy. Altona is proud to be part of the Brazilian national history of steel. The company started its foundry activity incorporating this material at the beginning of the Brazilian steel industrialization in the 1930s.

⚙ In the foundry line, machining is an important mechanical process that essentially shapes the steel part by progressively removing material. This process adds value to a steel casting that will then be able to suit different needs of the market.

Altona is equipped with over 30 machining units, such as:
✅ Horizontal and vertical CNC lathes;
✅ CNC machining centers;
✅ Bore milling machines;
✅ Milling machines;

In addition, devices for tool preparation and dimensional controls.

⚛ Altona is equipped with a Chemical Laboratory, responsible for carrying out tests on foundry sand and inspecting raw materials, which aims to guarantee the quality in the supplied alloys used in the production process.

Alloys are made of different types of materials, basically composed of iron with carbon and in some cases they receive additives.

🌎 Science Based Target Initiative - is a global initiative created in collaboration between some of the most important institutions in the world directly linked with sustainability issues.
Among them are Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), UN Global Compact, World Resources Institutes (WRI) and WWF NGO.
These organizations created SBTI as a resource to generate efforts against climate changes, engaging the private sector. This way, companies that are interested in taking part in the initiative need to build their targets based in science to be part of the global change.
🏭 Altona signed the commitment that contributes to the reduction by 1,5°C in the global temperature. SBTI targets to achieve this result by 2050. This action was taken because in the last decade (between 2010 and 2019) annual average global greenhouse gas emissions have reached historically high levels.
The concern with sustainability is in Altona’s Strategic Planning, directing new reflections, behaviours and actions, constantly updating controls regarding water and energy consumption and atmospheric emissions. For so, we carry out inventories of our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, following the international guidelines of the “GHG Protocol”, for instance. 🌱

🔥 The casting process consists of heating the metal to high temperatures until it is possible to reach the melting point.

After this process, the production of parts in the projected format begins. The molten metal is placed in molds and cooled down until it solidifies into the projected shape. It then goes through other processes until it is finalized and acquires the final requirements of the steel part.

🛠 During every step, castings undergo strict quality control processes to ensure their high performance in the market. This way we ensure our customers that Altona's products comply with international standards.

🐂 Altona was present at the Rural Trade Show - Cascavel!

🌱Focused on Brazilian agricultural sector expansion and innovation, the event presented techniques and products for rural producers to be more successful.

Altona serves agricultural machinery companies and attended the trade show to check out novelties and find new ways to develop this market segment together with its clients.🌽

🔔 To bring ever more development and quality to our clients, two new machines were just installed at Altona, enhancing the capacity on the machining production line and are ready to serve different market segments.

➡ A bore milling machine and a vertical lathe expand the machining capacity on the Jobbing Foundry Unit to serving steel parts up to 25 tons.

📅 On this date, 99 years ago, the German engineer Paul Werner and the local blacksmith Ersnt Auerbach transformed their will to develop solutions into an enterprise.
Auerbach & Werner was then founded, located in Altona neighborhood (now Itoupava Seca).
🔧 Beginning from domestic and agricultural utensils, the company grew little by little, and in 1933 incorporated steel into its production. It then became known as Electro Aço Altona.
Since its foundation, the company has been marked by the courage to innovate and today it is marked by its pioneering spirit, becoming the very first steel foundry in Santa Catarina and one of the first in Brazil.
For so, today we celebrate 99 years! 🎉

With an industrial complex of approx. 40,000 m2 of built area, we have a production capacity of 1,250 t/month for the production of repetitive and jobbing foundry parts.

Among the inspection options performed by Altona is the ultrasound, detecting with accuracy faults and irregularities in the steel parts.

Altona is able to perform different inspection options in its steel parts, to ensure that they meet all international quality requirements.

In 2021, during United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), held in Scotland, Brazilian federal government announced the country’s target to reduce carbon emissions in 50% by 2030, thus being able to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

At Altona, atmospheric emissions are monitored on a daily basis and the company is constantly upgrading the implemented management processes. Between 2016 and 2021, the company was performing 7 kinds of monitoring in the exhausing systems, and since 2022 monitoring has been increased to 29 exhaust systems.

Besides, the company has already signed commitments with global certifying entities in the commitment to meet the environmental requirements demanded by the market and reduce the carbon footprint.

In 2022, the company is already among the market leaders in sustainability, having adhered to the SDG agenda through the Global Compact - Brazil.

We revisit some flashes we took at Innotrans 2022, held in Berlin, Germany.

Altona participated for the second time in the exhibition. Railway is a heated market, that Altona is proud to further develop with its clientes.

We captured the shipment of two trucks with 27 tons of steel castings specially developed for the marine market.

Altona has been operating in this market segment for years and is always looking for the best way to develop this important sector of the
economy, together with its customers!

The defense sector requires pieces that are not only complex, but extremely resistant.
And it is with great pride that Altona performs in this market, supplying steel castings to important customers in the national defense industry.

For this reason, we participated in the EXPO DEFENSE fair in 2022, and here we share with you some photos from the exhibition that took place at
the air base in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina.
