Addressing a sitting MP in the house of assembly

27/10/2023

Dear Prime Minister Davis:

For several years now, I have monitored our environment as a responsible community citizen. I strongly believe that our country's environment should be a top priority. I began documenting environmental issues during former Prime Ministers Perry Christie and Hubert Minnis' tenure. These records include videos and photos that showcase both governments' actions toward environmental concerns. My observations show that neither government showed genuine concern for the environment. At times, it felt like there were obstacles to advocating for change. This left me feeling frustrated. However, I continued to document environmental issues, hoping that future leaders would take them more seriously. I believe that if we work together, we can make a difference and create a sustainable future for our country, The Bahamas.

As the newly appointed Prime Minister, I listen to you speak about climate change. I am listening to your firm belief that the Bahamas and the world should embrace or prepare for this change. You have highlighted the potential damage climate change could cause and the consequences for our beautiful country, the Bahamas. This is if changes are not made. We must work together to protect our country from climate change's devastating effects and clean up our environment as well.

Too many abandoned vehicles are on our streets, and the rodent population has become a major concern. I am passionate about preserving and keeping the environment clean for future generations. I propose a collaborative effort between myself, the Minister of Environmental Health, and other Bahamians. I propose to assist in developing a system that addresses these issues and cleans up the Bahamas. As a country that attracts millions of visitors yearly, enforcing existing laws and implementing necessary changes to keep our environment healthy is essential. The problem is getting more serious, and some Bahamians have become accustomed to ignoring it or developed "trash blindness." I admonish you to look at prioritizing environmental changes, particularly regarding cleanliness, and restore our streets to pristine condition. Your platform promises a new day in the Bahamas, so let's make it a reality by taking action on these critical environmental concerns. Let's start with small, achievable steps that will make a difference. We can begin with a community cleanup initiative and then move on to larger projects that have a lasting impact. Together, we can create a healthier and more sustainable environment for our citizens but one that is continuing to grow.

Sincerely,

Conchalay conchalar
