“I used to play football from a young age but I became more serious about it in 2013. A tournament organized by Woezer Events had no entry charge. Our team won the tournament, and later on, I participated in the C Division League (U-16) as a goalkeeper which my team won again.My decision to become a goalkeeper was influenced by Acho Leki (the goalkeeper of Drukpol). He trained and taught me all the basics.

In the winter of the same year, I got selected for the national team U-17 and trained in Gelephu. Acho Leki and the Druk Star head coach, Namgay even helped financially. I got selected for U-17 in 2014, a proud moment and played in A-Division in addition to international matches in Bangkok.

In 2015, I got selected for U-19 and U-23 in the next year and played for the SAG championship as the First 11. Our team also competed for AFC Asian Cup but didn’t qualify. I joined the Transport United FC in 2017 and won the BOB League which was one of the happiest moments of my life. I rejoined Druk Stars FC and won the Super League in 2018. It was the highlight of my life because they basically started my football career.

In 2020 and 2021, I played as a member of Paro FC. I am currently a member of Thimphu City FC. I struggled a lot for the first 5 years of my career. Even when I tried my hardest, I was told that I was too young for the national team and will have opportunities later. I was almost always the second choice in my clubs, and to work harder to be a part of the First 11. Our team didn’t win the President’s Cup in Mongar when we lost in the Penalty Kick and I felt like I couldn’t prove myself.

I regret not being able to participate in U-23 in 2019 because it clashed with my grade 12 board exam schedule and my parents suggested I do the exam. It was the time Bhutan came second in
the SAG.

In the winter of 2021, I became a part of the National Team for Bhutan. I was finally bearing the fruits of the years of hard work that I put in. My advice is that hard work, dedication and discipline make it possible to make a career out of sports in Bhutan. My goal is to win an international tournament and I want to guide youths and train them when I switch to coaching. I believe hard work sets me apart from other players who are equally as good!”
