Bhutan Food and Drug Authority

The Food Quality and Safety Division of Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA), Ministry of Health, organized a Biosafety Workshop from October 9-11, 2023 at Thimphu, Bhutan under the aegis of South Asia Biosafety Program (SABP) jointly with Agriculture & Food Systems Institute (AFSI), USA and Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL), India with financial support from US Department of Agriculture.

Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA), Bhutan Narcotic Control Agency (BNCA) and Drug Regulatory Authority (DRA) have been merged and renamed as Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) under the Ministry of Health.

World Food Safety Day which is commemorated on every 7th June is to encourage everyone, from the producer to the consumer, to adopt and expect food safety standards along the food supply chain. It is also to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agricultural production, market access, tourism and sustainable development.

Today 7th June 2023 we are celebrating the fifth World Food Safety Day (WFSD) with the theme ‘food standards save lives’. Food standards if followed deligiliently will ensure food safety and as per the WHO unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances can cause more than 200 different diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. It is also estimated that 600 million – almost 1 in 10 people – fall ill after eating contaminated food each year, resulting in 420,000 deaths and the loss of 33 million healthy life years.

Unsafe food creates a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, elderly and the sick.
