WASBO STATEMENT ON THE EXCLUSION OF FEMALE MANAGEMENT BY BFA FOR WAFCON 2022

The 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations, officially known as the 2022 TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations is in full flow in Morocco and will run until 23 July 2022. The Botswana Football Team, The Mares has made its appearance at the tournament, after fearlessly and successfully qualifying for the event for the first time in history. The team will kick off the tournament with Burundi on 04 July 2022. The team is under the tutelage of Coach Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang. The 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations tournament also doubles as the African qualifiers to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

While we are rallying behind The Mares 100% and wishing them the best with the tournament, it will be unjust of us not to convey our disappointment in the assembled male management that has accompanied the team to Morocco without the inclusion of the capable women football managers despite the Botswana Football Association having women in football structures and women in football leadership and having sung the women empowerment song for some years now. Women empowerment seems to be used as a campaign tool while actions on the ground contradict the principles of empowerment, inclusion, and equality. We call on the Botswana Football Association to walk the talk and ensure that this is corrected going forward.
