The choice of colour for the walls was the biggest challenge. Because of lots of colourful accessories, I wanted a wall paint that offered a blank canvas. As the majority of the furniture was white, I went with charcoal. I was originally concerned with how it would affect the appearance of space in the room and thought maybe it wouldn’t work for a 6-year-old’s bedroom. “Although I could picture the colour, I was still hesitant to use such a bold and dark hue for her room. After I painted the first wall, I knew it would work. Somehow it makes the room feel bigger, and it makes the colours pop.

One thing I love about warm grays is how they change colour throughout the day. In warmer light — during sunrise and sunset warm gray colours will appear taupe or brown. In the cooler light of dawn, midday or dusk, or in cool artificial light, the colour turns a purer gray. That’s why I advise homeowners who are testing out paint colours to view the hues during various times of the day, in the changing light, before making the final selection.

You may have noticed that gray is everywhere these days when it comes to home design and decor. Just about every product and material supplier I talk with is rushing to bring more gray products to the market. I’m noticing a bit of pushback, however, from homeowners who either are growing tired of cool gray hues or find them too cold and somber.

For those folks, I’ve been recommending warm gray as an easy-to-use neutral. The best way to spot warm gray paint colours is to gather a selection of grays together and compare them. You’ll notice some veer cooler (with a blue cast) or warmer (with a hint of brown).

If you don’t have the space (or budget) for a separate shower enclosure and bath, you’ve probably decided on a combined shower-bath. But should you go with a shower curtain or glass shower doors to enclose it? Some of us might gravitate toward the softer look of a colourful piece of waterproof fabric that can be changed at will, while others might love the no-nonsense efficiency of a sheer pane of glass. To help point you in the right direction, here are five benefits each of shower curtains and glass doors.

I enjoy seeing unexpected colours in unexpected places, such as inside a pendant shade or via the dining room table. The nice thing about using colour this way is that a table can be easily repainted or the light fixture replaced if and when your colour tastes evolve. After about five solid weekends of work — much longer than they thought it would take — they now have a large, solid surface for outdoor dining and gathering. What’s more, once they trimmed a few branches in the large oak tree that shades the deck, they realized the great potential for a couple of tree forts. Well done @

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Houzzers! If you’re like me, this weekend is going to be one of cleaning up your holiday decorations and riding that wave of organizational motivation that comes with a new year. I know I have to ride it immediately, because it won’t last long. This week we learned how to reuse our live trees, clean up and organize our holiday decorations, make realistic resolutions to enhance our homes and fight off that January let-down that can bring the winter blues. The Holidays are receding from view, and the excitement of the new year is brimming. Whether tending your garden is a New Year’s resolution or a release, all sorts of garden chores can make you feel productive this month. Scan seed catalogs, prune deciduous trees, leave some food and water out for hungry birds or maybe just enjoy the vista of a winter landscape.

SOME folks think they have to stifle the spirit and eschew traditions entirely if their house is on the market in November and December. Not true. You can celebrate the season and still make your home attractive to potential buyers. Here’s how.

Furniture that is too far away makes a space feel uncomfortable; too close, and your guests will be tripping over one another.
Place the coffee table 15 to 18 inches from the sofa.
Side tables should be close enough to armchairs that you can easily set down a drink.
Keep about 3 feet of space between furniture where people need to walk through.
Position seats no more than 10 feet away from one another (for example, measure from the sofa across the coffee table to an armchair on the other side) for good conversation.
