SERVICE OF THE HOLY BURIAL SHROUD The service of the Holy Burial Shroud is part of a special Vespers celebrated on Holy Friday. The Burial Shroud (winding sheet) is a large cloth icon with a painted or embroidered image of the Saviour laid in the tomb. Near the end of the Vespers, the priests and servers raise the Shroud from the altar and carry it into the centre of the church to be put on a low table which represents the Tomb of Christ. It is decorated with many flowers. The Gospel is laid in the centre of the Shroud. As the Shroud is carried out, «Noble Joseph» troparion is chanted.
