Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning for Abbotsford today, July 8th through tomorrow, July 9th, evening.

Our tips to beat the heat:

🙌Check on others: Remember to check regularly on family members and neighbours, particularly seniors and those who are housebound.
🧃Stay hydrated: Drink cool non-alcoholic beverages (preferably water) irrespective of your activity intake. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.
🌄If you are out during the day, wear sunscreen, dress in lightweight clothing and find shade in parks.
🐶Never leave any children or pets inside vehicles.
❄️Seek out an air-conditioned facility (such as a shopping centre, library, community centre, restaurant, or a residence of friends or family).
💦Visit one of Abbotsford’s public pools, or spray parks:
- Spud Murphy Spray Park at 32285 Hillcrest Avenue
- Mill Lake Spray Park at 2310 Emerson Street
- Shadbolt Park Spray Park at 36086 Shadbolt Avenue
- Abbotsford Recreation Centre at 2499 McMillan Road
- Matsqui Recreation Centre at 3106 Clearbrook Road
- Centennial Pool at 2310 Emerson Street

The Salvation Army (34081 Gladys Ave) is providing a drop-in cooling space from 9am to 5pm from today until July 14th. City staff are working with community partners to support the needs of people who are unhoused.

🚿A reminder that stage 1 water restrictions are still in effect. Details can be found at ourwatermatters.ca.

Due to lack of access to period products, people who menstruate will often stay home and bleed in private.

This means missed opportunities to learn, earn an income, contribute to their community, or enjoy a healthy social life for no reason other than a natural function of their body.

Help us tackle period poverty and improve quality life by donating to support British Columbians most in need.

We're excited to share that United Way BC was named one of BC's Top 100 Employers in 2024!!! 🏆🏆🏆

On November 17, 2023, we also made the Top 100 Canada's Top Employers, an annual competition that identifies the leading Canadian employers that offer exceptional workplaces. United Way BC proudly attracts a diverse staff that is community-oriented and purpose-driven.

"This recognition reflects the strong culture that we have been building since our amalgamation in 2021. Merging workplace cultures is no easy feat, especially during such challenging global times, for any corporation. With people-centric policies and growth opportunities for employees during this transformational change, United Way BC has shown that change does not have to be an impediment and can even lead to increased opportunities for employees," Michael McKnight, President & CEO, United Way BC.

We are grateful, honoured, and ! ♥️

🛠️ Laura, Red Seal Welder, Fabricator, Natasha, Steamfitter with UA Local 170 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, Level 2 Welder, and Community Support Worker, and Kendra, Second-year Electrical Apprentice, are founding members of Tools To Empower. Their mission: to build brighter futures through skills, compassion, and community by inspiring under-represented youth and individuals through Trades and STEM-related education.

🤝These volunteers partnered with United Way British Columbia to build the Cedar Valley Community Cupboard, which houses non-perishable food, sanitary products, and diapers for those in need in this Fraser Valley community.

💓 Not only did they complete the structure, they filled it with essential items for the grand opening in earlier this Fall (that’s Laura on the left and Natasha on right). This moment of pride and accomplishment showcased their dedication to community well-being.

🔧 In addition to their work on the Community Cupboard, Tools To Empower accessed United Way British Columbia's fund to run a series of workshops in Cedar Valley. From Halloween String Art to Copper iPad Stand Making, they're actively contributing to skill-building and community enrichment.

This , we celebrate Laura, Natasha and Kendra for their impactful contributions and dedication to building a stronger, more empowered community!
