Such a helpful quote to understand the importance of EMPATHY with children! Being empathetic with children, means we understand that they are doing their best and need our support in learning how to be "in charge" of their feelings. There will be time to correct and teach after, FIRST focus on exploring, understanding, and being with the feeling. Once children are "in charge" of their feelings again, they will be able to hear and accept the next steps more effectively.
Play therapy is a powerful modality that supports children, adolescents, and adults. As a Certified Play Therapist, I am so excited to be able to share information about this therapeutic approach. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about play therapy.
This is one of my favourite videos to demonstrate the power of EMPATHY. True, genuine, connection, and understanding...empathy has such healing capacity.
Brené Brown has such a wonderful way of explaining this!

This quote popped into my mind today. It often does when I remember it is okay to sit in the discomfort of not being able to "fix" or "find the solution". In these moments it can often be most helpful to lean into the experience of "connection". The moments of togetherness and empathy (even without a solution) can go a long way. This is the STRENGTH of human love!
I HIGHLY recommend this book! Such a great read to understand how developmental trauma impacts children, and applies this specifically to the school setting. Not to mention the many wonderful and supportive strategies that professionals can take away.
So great I’m even re-reading in the car!
Also...let's not forget teachers! I think it's amazing and admirable when teachers reach out for extra resources and supports in order to most effectively support their students!
Enjoy back to school!
7 Tips for Educators Returning to School During COVID-19 When COVID-19 restrictions ease, students and educators must adapt and prepare for a return to schools. School staff will need to support students in the transition back to the classroom, and at the same time manage their own transition and anxiety. This article provides suggestions for school staff....
As we get closer to back to school (who can believe summer is coming to an end?!)...
I've had a lot of inquires about back to school support. There are some amazing resources out there. I wanted to share a couple.
Please remember to individualize your strategies, not every approach works for every individual (child, parent, or teacher). This is okay! It's most important to be genuine and sincere in your approach. If you feel like you need more support and resources it is okay to reach out to professionals in your community.
Remember understanding, curiosity, empathy, and connection are key!

Thank you for visiting my page! I’m excited to use this space as an opportunity to share some information with you!
I’ve designed this space as an information page only. Please remember this page is not intended to provide clinical care or recommendations. Instead I wanted to create a safe and nonjudgmental place where people could learn about the services I offer and about mental health supports available in general. As a Social Worker, it is important to me that I am providing resources to my community and helping to connect individuals to support where I can.
Please remember this is a Public Facebook site. This means anything you post, like, or react to is not confidential and in fact public (available for anyone to see). Please be mindful of this if you decide to like, comment, etc. Although, this is a public page, I am monitoring comments and will work to ensure that all content on this page is supportive of a safety, respect, and mental health. I am striving to create a safe place to share knowledge and support mental, emotional, and physiological wellbeing. Please feel free to help me do this ☺
Additionally, this page is not a method I use for providing clinical support. However, my professional phone number and email address is available on the page if you are looking for professional support. You are welcome to use these methods to reach out to me. If you are in need of crisis please reach out to the Emergency Department of your Local Hospital. This page is not designed, monitored, or able to provide crisis support.
With that all being said... I am hopeful you will find some useful and helpful pieces here: a resource or two, or maybe a quick smile, moment of encouragement, understanding, or connection.
