Today, members of the BHHJN gathered at Liberty North to remind Barrie Mayor Nuttall that he is responsible for the interests of all his constituents.

We called for a reversal of the May 2023 motion that punishes people for survival and community care. We want housing and shelter solutions, not criminalization!

We had an opportunity to speak with a number of his luncheon guests, many of whom engaged positively, expressed interest or support, and took our literature.

We greatly appreciate everyone who came out today, and all those who supported this action behind the scenes. Our power is in our community, and that power is truly great.

We are proud to endorse this submission to the United Nations. Thanks for including us!

Today we sent the City of Barrie's proposed public space bylaw to the UN Rapporteurs on Homelessness & Extreme Poverty for review. It is an egregious example of public space legislation that endangers people in poverty & at risk of drug poisoning.

06/21/2023

Proudly posted on the walls of city hall: Barrie City Council's strategic plan through 2026.

Tell us Barrie Mayor, how do Bill 67 and 68:

- "Encourage a range of housing options to make housing attainable" when they specifically limit someone's ability to erect any structures to protect themselves against the elements?

- "Work with our partners to implement community safety and well-being plan" when most if not all community agencies in the city have openly opposed these bills?

- "Expand and maximize access to parks and recreation opportunities" when bleachers are being removed, washrooms closed, acceptable park activities restricted, classes of people being targeted for removal, and beautifying greenery reduced?

- "Support active transportation and pedestrian connections" when the folx who use transit and walk through the city the most are being stigmatized further and targeted for harassment out of parks based on enforcement's subjective judgemement, profiling, and biases?

- "Ensure accountability and transparency" by misusing the Motion Without Notice mechanism to change by-laws, exclude public discourse, disallow deputations, and ram through changes as your own citizens, Human Rights Commission, and multiple organisation's across the country decry these actions?

Explain yourself.

Photos from BHHJN's post 06/21/2023

Continuing their pattern of behaviour of limiting communication and hampering the people's charter rights to organize, assemble, and peacefully protest the city has turned off the power outlets on the public poles next to the camp out at City Hall so folx staying overnight in protest can't charge their phones and devices to communicate, organize, and stay safe.

SHAME ON COUNCIL! SHAME ON THE CITY!

Open letter – Barrie 06/20/2023

The human rights commission is watching what is happening in Barrie and is standing with us against the actions of council and impact of bills 67 and 68.

This cannot happen quietly! This affects everyone in Barrie!

If city council is allowed to violate our human rights, to say nothing of our Charter rights as Canadians, then they will only continue that behaviour.

If that process is allowed to start here, then it only ends when we've run out of rights to defend!

Join us tomorrow at city hall and show council that you will defend your rights and the rights of your neighbors!

Do the survey! 🏘️ Speak up for affordable housing, even if all you say is, we need more. (And maybe mention recognizing housing as a right, if you want to.) NIMBYism was cited as one of the top barriers to creating more affordable housing, so get on record supporting it - it helps give our elected officials the courage to do what is right. 👍
