I fell snowboarding in January 2023 and jammed my wrist. I got x-rays the next day, and I was told there was no fracture and if it didn't feel better in a few months to come back for more imaging. Fast forward to May, and I still had no flexion or extension, and it was making exercise and training clients a difficult and painful experience. I went back for further imaging and was told to wait for an appointment. Well, they lost the requisite, and I didn't get imaging again until September. Turns out it was broken in 2 (scaphoid non union), and I had an early onset of osteoarthritis from the injury.
Originally, the surgery was going to be bone graft from the illiac crest of my hip to the scaphoid, but after further imaging (MRI and CT), it was revealed that this bone was fragmented and had been fractured several times before. My surgeon decided to take a different route proceeding with a distal pole excision and tendon interposition being a more suitable option in terms of avoiding prolonged cast immobilization, avoiding donor site morbidity, avoiding risk of persistent nonunion, and enabling early return to physical activity.
December 19th, I got my surgery at Toronto Western Hospital with Dr Zuo. Excision of left scaphoid non-union distal pole with left palmaris longus tendon graft for interposition in STT joint and left radial styloidectomy.
In simpler terms, they removed 70% of the scaphoid bone, filled the spaced that was left over with the palamaris tendon, and shaved the wrist bone down to help with mobility.
My wrist is healing up well, and soon, I will begin rehabilitation in the hopes I can get back under the bar and start exercise in the next few weeks.
Thank you to my clients for being patient with my down time and recovery and thank you to anyone who was patient enough to read this long post.
I look forward to getting back to working with my clients in 2024 and getting myself and Houle Fitness clients in the best shape of our lives.
2024 is ours.
