Forklifts
We need to remember that forklifts are NOT snow plows. Unfortunately, we need to remind people that forklifts are not to be used to plow snow.
In a recent situation, we took on a 16,000lbs Forklift Mast Repair. After looking at the unit and diagnosing the needed repairs, we noted that there were motor issues, cab issues, and mast issues. Our technicians were able to repair the motor issues and cab issues but when it comes to mast issues, they require major work, which means major money.
Unfortunately, following these discoveries, we found out that the owner of this unit had been plowing snow in his yard with it for the past couple of years. All in all, forklifts help us every day and we need to ensure we are using them appropriately so there doesn’t present any unwanted issues down the road!
To prolong their lifetime, make sure to l**e them up once in a while, treat them to a bolt tightening or two every month, and they will certainly pass inspections and ensure they're operable everyday.
Please remember that Forklifts and Telehandlers don’t do well with impact. They are also not built to withstand the pushing and shoving around of snow loads, the rollers break, and the Telehandler equalizer chains can snap.

Safety importance of Crane Wheels
As mentioned previously, crane wheels are of great importance, more specifically the issue of mismatched wheels. To further explain, the wheel must match the profile of the rail, I Beams require angled wheels, and W Beams require flat wheels.
Clearly mismatched wheels is a safety concern. What happens when mismatched wheels are discovered? Well, let’s answer these two questions: What are the issues and how do we correct them?
Did you know that underslung crane wheels exist all over the place? Simple examples are Jib Crane Trolleys. A simple trolley is easy to replace, and is cost effective. Unfortunately, in the case of 5 Ton Capacities and greater, repair costs are high. On top of that, purpose built wheel situations are really difficult. However, if loading of the wheels is within 25% to 50% of maximum loading, then there is potential that the trolley stub shafts will survive.
Another example we have seen and had to repair by welding, is the twisting of beams, more specifically, the case of “Wheeled Gantries”. Similarly, stub shafts are under shear and bend. This is normal. However, when the bearing surface is not riding on the beam properly, point loading becomes extreme. The moment on the stub shaft is more than designed for. This can cause the stubs to bend and possibly fracture. As a result, catastrophic failure can occur.
In the nondestructive world, we are looking for indications. How can you possibly see behind the wheels? Well, “Squealing” noises are an indicator. In one recent situation, the squealing of the wheels on the rails was the giveaway. When the end trucks were reinforced (our engineered repair) with C-Shaped ends, the wheels were reinforced. They were no longer in “bend”.
Each situation has to be considered upon what the service condition looks like. Our technicians spot this prior to failure. Consulting Crane Tech Services prior to major installs and builds can save you a lot of money. The savings become significant 10 years down the road when workers find out that the crane doesn’t operate properly. At Crane Tech Services we save you money, and using Crane Tech keeps your workers safe.

Crane Wheels
Crane Wheels and the proper installation of them are of high importance to ensure a functioning piece of equipment. The slip of an engineers pen, the specification made in error, And the error transposed onto a drawing are all easy mistakes to make. These mistakes have happened in the past and continue to happen in todays’ crane installations.
More specifically, an I-Beam (or S Shape Beam) has an angled fl**ge and a W Shape Beam (H Beam) has a flat fl**ge. Why is this so important? Well, the crane wheels must match the profile.
For example, an Angled beam (S Shape) requires an angled wheel. Trolleys that are motorized with mismatched wheels are a problem. Bridges with mismatched wheels are also a problem. Now, why does this happen? Often a structural contractor will install the steel and then a crane manufacturer will assume the fl**ge is flat. Workers will then not see the wedging effect or misalignment, as the assumption is that the build is correct. A flat wheel operating on an S-Shape with the angled fl**ge will, over time, open up or show up in the form of different service conditions.

Customer Service:
Crane Tech Services cares about its' customers! Our owner Dave goes above and beyond for his customers, which eventually develops a friendship rather than a business relationship.
Here’s a story from Dave: “It was an easy decision.” That was a comment from my customer Rob, from Walker Drilling. “I’ll call Crane Tech.” Rob was a customer I had met about 10 years ago. At the time he was operating a crane for Trans Canada Pipeline. We had certified his Hiab 244E for several years. However, this inspection was actually for a Fassi F170.A type of crane.
As is normal, we talked about life. On top of inspections, many of our customers are friends. Rob has 3 grown kids that are doing very well with their careers these days.
It is a very high honour to have good people – good customers – look us up again. We work hard to earn your trust.
