We all of those good intentions when you sign up for a self-paced online course — you can do them at your own pace and not feel rushed, it is online so it is convenient and it can fit into your busy life.
I’m not knocking self-paced online courses as they have some very great content, but they don’t always have the impactful outcome the consumer desires. The unfortunate reality is that the completion rates for online self-paced courses are very low. Various research has the percentage rate for completion of online courses between 5 and 15 percent. Low completion rates could be a result of: lack of structure, limited interaction & support, or limited accountability.
This is why I designed my Back to Basics LIVE 6-week cohort-based nutritional training course to encompass:
✔️Structure: a set time each week for the group to meet — Thursdays from 7-8:30 pm EST.
✔️Interaction & Support: The sessions are held live online, so you get to interact with your instructor, aka me, and ask any questions or clarifications that arise from the material. The course is also limited to 8 participants to keep the group small to give anyone who wants to participate has the ability to do so.
✔️Accountability: The course includes a What’s App group where you can interact with our individuals and share tips, tricks or keep each other accountable. I will also answer questions on the What’s App group if they arise in between sessions, so you get ongoing support & guidance outside of the Thursday evenings.

Local pick-up only.
Have you ever considered getting your produce right from the farmer? It has added benefits that even getting organic from a grocery store can’t beat. By supporting local you get the added benefits of:
✔️Fresher food: most local produce has been picked within the last 24 hours, ensuring it is ripe.
✔️Food with more nutrients: Since it is sold soon after picking, it is at its peak nutrient-density. In contrast, most supermarket produce was picked days or weeks prior to reaching the grocery store shelf. As soon as a food is harvested its nutrient content begins to deteriorate, specifically vitamins C, E, A and some B.
✔️Added variety: you will never be bored with the same choices and it expands your horizons. Ever seen kohlrabi in the grocery store?
✔️Helping the environment: buying local shortens the distribution chain, forcing food directly from the farm to fork, less waste spent on shipping & transportation packaging is produced in the process.
✔️Supporting sustainable agriculture: eating locally encourages diversification of local agriculture and crop variety. This, in turn, reduces the reliance on monoculture; single crops grown over a wide area to the detriment of soils.
So now that you know the benefits, what is the easiest way to buy local through the growing season? Consider getting a CSA!! Learn more and get 18 weeks of fresh produce from June-October.

Each decision you make, is 100% your choice. As a nutritionist, I can give you all the basic tips and tricks and explain why you need to prioritize your nutrition. You can also have all the intentions and best wishes, but there has to be physical action on your part to prioritize your nutrition and health, not mine. Although I will educate and empower you with information in order to make those shifts easier, so you can sustain them throughout your life.

Sometimes we use food to cope with emotion. It is OK to emotionally eat, the key is to recognize it is happening and also knowing it won’t solve the problem. If you find you are eating when you are not biologically hungry you are usually doing so cover/ignore/numb an emotion. The best way to gauge if you are using food to cope with emotion is to ask yourself “Am I full? If yes, then what other need am I trying to fill with the food?” Food may be taking care of some of these feelings:
✔ Boredom
✔ Procrastination
✔ Bribery and Reward
✔ Excitement
✔ Soothing
✔ Love
✔ Anger
✔ Stress & Anxiety

Week 2 session of Back to Basics training, I gave my group a fun little challenge to try and consume 15-20 different vegetables throughout the week. One ingenious participant condensed 15 different vegetables in one meal (pictured). They were so proud! 😍

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression characterized by a recurrent seasonal pattern, with symptoms lasting about 4−5 months out of the year. It is also called “winter depression” associated with the onset of winter and the reduced environmental light.
Symptoms of SAD include:
Difficulty waking up in the morning
Oversleeping
Fatigue
Low mood
Cravings for Carbohydrates
Weight Gain
SAD generally goes away when the sun returns in the spring and summer. If you have symptoms of SAD some tools to help during the winter:
1. Supplement with Vitamin D, as it supports neurotransmitter synthesis, converting the amino acid tryptophan to serotonin.
2. Get outside, even if the sun isn’t out. Getting exposure to natural light helps regulate your circadian rhythm and provides an uptake of serotonin.
3. Get moving. Movement or exercise helps with the uptake of serotonin.
4. Get adequate sleep. Proper sleep plays a role in helping your mental wellness and your immune system.
4. Turn off your devices at minimum one hour before bed. When the sun goes down at 4:30 pm, it is natural to turn to your phone, iPad or laptop to keep you entertained. That’s A-OK, but ensure you put your devices away at least an hour before bedtime to help you regulate your circadian rhythm and to help you sleep better.
5. Practice gratitude in small or large ways. Gratitude has so many health benefits, including improving your mood, immune health, relationships, and sleep.
Since I have yet to introduce myself on this platform, let’s give this a-go.

Ok, now that you know a little about me, let me tell you why I not only became a Holistic Nutritionist, but why I started my business: To empower and educate individuals on nutrition so they can take control and care of their overall mental health. Food fuels our entire body, it is the gasoline to our combustion engine, and the fuel we choose impacts how well we run mentally and physically. This is my mission statement and I keep it in mind with every piece of content I post or offer I create.
Let me get to know you too! Post a fun fact in the comments or just say “hi”!
With the passing of a calendar year, I no longer feel the need to nor do I want to participate in the following
1. Diets. I consciously select nutritious foods every day that fuel my body, and my mental health. I do not feel the need to restrict or alter my eating habits to fit a societal norm be that a body type or dietary style such as intermittent fasting.
2. Resolutions. I resolve every day to continually learn, grow and be in alignment with my true self. I do not feel the need to make a resolution simply because it is a new calendar year.
