As grocery prices continue to soar in Canada and the US, consumers are turning to frozen food as a cost-saving measure.

Items such as frozen chicken, prepared meals, pizzas and vegetables, French fries, and potato wedges have become increasingly popular among shoppers – not only due to their affordability, but also to the reduction in waste and their longer shelf life.

According to findings by research firm 210 Analytics and Cornell University, a rise in concern about food waste has driven consumers to choose frozen food to reduce food waste at home.

A recent study has found that approximately 40% of food in the United States is uneaten or wasted. Refrigerated foods and fresh foods are too often discarded due to spoilage and untouched leftovers.

Frozen foods provide an extended shelf-life and enable consumers to portion their foods according to their needs with less worry about consuming the remaining amount immediately.

Apart from frozen food being a more convenient alternative, 79% of the 1,500 survey participants of 210 Analytics describe the portioning aspect as a purchasing factor. Consumers have and will continue to benefit financially from frozen foods in the long run because it can be consumed over a longer period of time.  

Walmart Canada has officially launched its Delivery Pass subscription program this month, allowing customers to have access to unlimited, free next-day delivery on over 65,000 items including groceries and general merchandise.

The Delivery Pass provides customers the convenience of having their goods delivered quickly while also being competitively priced at $8.97 CAD/mo or $89 CAD/yr. Chief E-Commerce Officer, Laurent Duray, pertains to the subscription program as “a game changer for Canadians” as it takes out the dilemma of having to choose between low-prices and fast-delivery times.

As of this week, the Delivery Pass is available to customers in Ottawa. Other big cities such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal will follow with its launches prior to the program being rolled out across the country this summer.

The CPMA has drafted a new Sustainable Packaging Guide and is open to industry feedback.

According to the Government of Canada’s website, only 9% of our plastic waste is recycled while the rest ends up in our landfills, waste-to-energy facilities, or albeit, the environment.

In support of Canada’s vision for a zero plastic waste future, the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) has launched a draft ‘Sustainable Packaging Guide’ (SPG) for food and fresh produce that can be seen at https://sustainable-packaging.ca/. The guide includes useful tools for packaging decision-makers such as self-assessment tools, packaging guides and use cases, and supporting resources.

The Sustainable Packaging Guide aims to help the food and fresh-produce industry to make more informed decisions regarding their packaging practices while also encouraging the industry to provide feedback to improve the SPG draft and layout.

A growing part of Loblaw Companies Limited’s commitment to sustainability, the Canadian retailer has acquired five hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) from Kenworth. The trucks average a range of over 700 kilometers, making it ideal for the company's long-haul deliveries. Due to the advanced and efficient build of the trucks, Kenworth cites them to refuel quickly at approximately 15-20 minutes only.

Keeping shelves stocked to provide for communities across Canada involves a complex functioning supply chain. According to their Chief Administrative Officer, Rob Wiebe, their trucks are constantly on the road due to this predicament and leaves a large carbon footprint. Thus, the purchase serves to help Loblaw in achieving a net-zero carbon emission footprint by 2040.
