How long have you been coaching functional fitness?

-I’ve been coaching for about 3.5 years now.

Outside of DF, what do you fill your time with?

-Time? What time? I work full time as a professional donut eater (😉). It is an incredibly fulfilling job, the gym provides excellent and necessary balance. I also am a proud bonus mom of a spitfire 5 year old, I am a dog mom and really enjoy the outdoors - hiking, yard work, biking etc.

If you could design your ideal workout - what movements would it involve?

-My ideal workout with involve a heavy BARBELL 😍 specifically Hang Cleans and Push Jerks. I also love Box Jumps, Handstand Push-ups and DB Sn**ches.

Why do you coach at DeadSet?

-Well… the obvious answer is because I own it 😂 BUT the reason Chris and I were passionate about creating the DF culture is because we’ve experienced what consistent fitness has done for us. We’re “DeadSet” on improving member’s quality of life through fitness. What I love about coaching day to day are the members by far. I LOVE interacting with passionate, like minded people, all with drastically different backgrounds.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

-I grew up on a farm, playing fur mumma to all sorts of animals. At one point I had two pocket gophers living in an elaborate hamster cage in my bedroom. What happened to them? Oh, my mom didn’t close my curtains when I went to camp and they got a little sun exposure…

How long have you been coaching functional fitness?

My coaching background began in 2010 with baseball and eventually led to fitness coaching in 2020. I have CrossFit L1 and CrossFit/Burgener Weightlifting certificates with hopefully more to come. I coach Foundations, General, and Weightlifting classes at DF and provide 1:1 or small group personal training as well.

Outside of DF, what do you fill your time with?

More work! Operating DF with Brooke is a full time job, and we each have careers elsewhere that keep our schedules full. We spend lots of time being active with our 5-year-old daughter Lainey, and two dogs Rosa and Cooper. I fill any remaining time with building projects and some very unimpressive golf.

If you could design your ideal workout - what movements would it involve?

Anything squat or lunge related, short duration, high intensity. Last week we had a simple but super fun workout:
7 Rounds
10 Back Squats (95/65)
35 Double Unders
This one was a ton of fun to coach and even better to do in class!

Why do you coach at DeadSet?

The owners tell me that it's part of a contract that I don't recall signing. Really though, it's super cool watching people progress over time and seeing those who had no fitness background at all to find something new they love doing. The members at DF are a lot of fun and make any class exciting whether I'm coaching or getting after it out on the floor with them. I really enjoy taking classes from other coaches on the DF team as well; they all have different delivery styles and still teach me a lot about improving my own movement and I see different ways to coach others.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 💫

Natalie is a pillar at DF. She is a regular in the noon class, getting her workout in on her lunch break Monday-Friday 💪🏻
She’s been in the Fuctional Fitness/ CrossFit game for years but she’s still hungry for growth. Example, she just started implementing double unders into workouts as opposed to just pre-workout practice.

As one of the smoooothest (✨😍) barbell opporators - she is a thing of beauty in a fast, BB cycling workout, often distracting our less experienced members 🤩

We are so pleased to have Natalie at DF as she brings the sass and quiet humour to each class. We look forward to watching her progress 🔥

Here’s what Natalie had to say about DeadSet;

I joined Deadset just over a year ago after having taken a very extended break from functional fitness. Since joining, I have been the most consistent that I ever have been at any gym. A big part of that is the welcoming and fun atmosphere and the people that make up this community. You know that your gym people know you well when they call you out for showing up at different time than normal!

I have appreciated the small class sizes and experienced coaching - there’s not a class that goes by that I don’t learn a new tip or trick to help with a specific movement. I’ve made noticeable gains in the weights I can lift and am continuously getting a little bit closer so those tricky gymnastics movements.

The supportive environment even pushed me to compete in a partner competition this spring, which was never on my bucket list but am so glad I completed! For anyone who has never tried functional fitness or is scared to step into the gym for the first time - know that joining is the hardest part. There are scaled options for every level and no matter what your skill level is you’ll always get a great workout. I’m very thankful to Brooke and Chris for creating this space that has become such a big part of my week.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 💫

Drew is a staple at DF, more specifically at the 5:40pm class as he is in attendance almost every single week day 🤩 Drew has work ethic that is hard to achieve, leaving it all on the floor every. single. workout 🔥

Put this guy on a machine and it’s lights out. Lower body workouts - he can put himself through the pain cave 😎

Drew is not only an athlete through and through but he is also a wonderful personality to have in the gym. He’s incredibly supportive, motivating and has a contagious laugh.

Here’s what Drew had to say about DeadSet;

“I started at DeadSet to try and get more active. I grew up playing sports and being active that way, but after university and starting work full time I found myself with fewer opportunities to stay active through sport. Functional fitness at DeadSet has given me an outlet to stay active and maintain a bit of competitiveness. It has also helped me to learn new movements, improve existing skills and increase my fitness level. 

I really appreciate the class structure of functional fitness. It allows me to just show up and move my body without having to plan workouts. It is also great to be able to get to know other members that you attend class with. As well, the coaches are knowledgeable, welcoming, and accommodating. Having great eager to show demonstrations or suggest modifications for new movements and movement modifications makes learning those movements and being more comfortable in the gym that much easier. 
Attending DeadSet classes has been a terrific addition to my daily routine. I look forward to attending a class after work, chatting with the other members, and getting in a good workout. It makes me feel more energetic and accomplished after a day of sitting at the office. I appreciate DeadSet and my opportunity to have fun while keeping active there. I look forward to attending more classes and gaining more functional fitness skills!”

Introducing Brook - The latest inductee to The 100 Class Club 🎉

If you’ve ever been in class with Brook, you’ll know she is incredibly humble and doesn’t try to attract attention BUT she’s hard to ignore when she’s moving the amount weight she does or blazing through a tough conditioning workout 🌶️💪🏻

Brook really showed what it looks like when hard work pays off in the DF Open 🔥 specially in the devil-ish Burpee/ DB Sn**ch workout - she put up one of the toughest times to beat, just don’t ask her because she’ll likely disagree in her very modest state 😂

Big things to come from this one!! Great work Brook 😁

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 💫

Kathy joined DF with the mindset that it was finally time to put herself first. She is an extremely busy mom of 3 who is used to making sure everyone is looked after before she is. Welp, Kathy has done a hell of a job since she shifted her mindset!
She’s still a Super Mom, she’s just a FIT Super Mom now 🦸‍♀️💪🏻

Kathy’s biggest competition is herself, she’s hungry for improvement and seeing those gaaainzz, which is easy to watch happen when she attends 5 classes a week on the regular. 🤩

Members are inspired by the work ethic and discipline Kathy shows each and every day. Her strength has gone through the roof, she no longer swears at the beginning of a conditioning workout and she may even crack a smile on the echo bike. 😎

Kathy is what DeadSet aims to embody. You deserve to prioritize yourself. Thank you for being your authentic self Kathy. ☺️

Here’s what Kathy had to say about DeadSet;

“Before coming to Deadset, I had been working out on my own either following an online program or a program made for me from a fitness professional. However, I was always working out alone and when you're not sure if you're doing things correctly it’s hard to stay motivated. It can be very easy to not go, quit half way through, rush through moves or stay at low weights you know you can control.

It can be scary, overwhelming and awkward starting somewhere new but I felt very welcomed in by everyone. I love going to the gym now! I soon found myself to be the 9am staple of the gym! LOL I love just showing up and being walked through the warm up and workout! I have more confidence in lifting more weight knowing I have someone there making sure I am doing things properly. My weights have significantly increased in just 9 months.

I do have to give credit for my quick improvements to the coaches of Deadset! I find there have been some mental barriers I have hit because I didn't think I could physically do something. They have helped me see that I can do those things, I just maybe need a little nudge! Which sometimes comes in the form of pull up bar being moved mid workout, a plate missing off my pile for box jumps or them offering to "lower my weights when I start struggling" and then they never change them! 😅

I find the classes have been so beneficial and I wish I had of started this years ago! If you are a beginner, I highly recommend coming to classes and if you aren't come anyway because it's fun! It's also nice to be able to encourage others on their journey, whatever that journey may be or look like! The gym owners, staff and class takers have been an amazing support to help keep this journey so enjoyable!”

Physical fitness plays a vital role in children’s overall development. Engaging in regular exercise and leading an active lifestyle not only promotes physical health but also positively impacts mental and emotional well-being.

So with that being said kids classes are coming!!! Registration will open April 1st for kids ages 5-8 years old starting May 12th @ 11:15 and will run for 6 weeks!

You know what it is - SUZANNE😎 Our latest inductee to The 250 Club 👏🏻

If you have been following along with DF, you know Suz. She’s a major contributor to the positive culture of the gym. Always showing up to push herself physically, accomplishing everything she puts her mind to.

She’s 52 - has a 285lbs Deadlift, a 220lbs Back Squat, is working on her handstands and is so dang close to her strict pull-ups. Not to mention she’s competed in two competitions and has her third coming up in May.

The 2024 DeadSet Open has come to an end!

Thank you to our incredible athletes who pushed past perceived limits and showed what they are truly made of. Some are missing from this picture but damn, what a crew 😎

Thank you to the spectators which consisted of friends, family and other DF members. You made the atmosphere 🔥🔥 nearly blowing the roof off of DF every Saturday (sorry neighbours🤭).

We are all still riding that high and will continue to for awhile! Britt will keep the hype going as I’m sure she will be posting some incredible content in the coming days 🤘🏻

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT💫
Garth, AKA Our Lumberjack, AKA Gaerth, AKA many different names depending on his wife’s mood 😋

This guy has worked his butt off, seriously! Along with huge improvements in mobility, endurance and strength, Garth has gained a ton of lean muscle and worked off some excess weight that wasn’t serving him. He’s really done it all, and he stays hungry. Garth always has a new challenge for himself like deadlifting 500lbs, walking on his hands or completing his first CrossFit competition ✅

Not only has he transformed into a physical specimen, this guy brightens up the room when he walks in. You can count on him to do something unexpected that has you laughing like crazy. Garth exemplifies the characteristics of what we love to see in our DF members. He’s a great role model to his two kids, a husband and a hard working man taking care of everyone’s more stubborn tree concerns 🌲

Be like Garth 😎 Here’s what Garth had to say about DeadSet;

It’s been JUST over a year at deadset for me and I wouldnt change a thing.

I’d say my favourite part about the gym is the community. The friends I've made and the unwavering support they give is unmatched. The smiles when you walk in and the steady stream of laughs changes it for me from some form of obligatory event into a hangout with like-minded people that leaves me always looking forward to the next class.

The biggest impact deadset fitness has had on me is my physical health. Since I started on this adventure Ive shed 25 pounds and dramatically increased my levels of physical fitness and my joint mobility. These changes have had a cascade effect on my life at work and at home. At work Ive never felt stronger, more energized, than ever before. Being able to utilize the correct form for lifts or movements taught in class, at work, takes most of my daily aches and pains away. At home Im able to keep up with the tornado that is my children and not needing to take a breather after chasing them around the park.

Do not skip out. Functional fitness is not just burpees or echo bikes or skipping, its climbing stair cases while carrying all the groceries in one trip, its shoveling snow without a chiropractor visit, or its a long walk through the woods. Functional fitness WILL make a better you.

Chelsea has quickly become a staple member in classes, showing just how naturally athletic she is! Chelsea has a grit to her that doesn’t go unnoticed, but she also is a cheerleader and genuine support for her fellow members. The strength Chelsea exerts is jaw dropping, having one of the heaviest back squats in the gym. Chelsea is also a real life hero 🦸‍♀️ she’s a Registered Nurse, working long various hours putting everyone else’s wellbeing before her own 🙌🏻 AND did we mention she joined the prestigious 100 Class Club last week!!

“In the first foundations class I attended, Brooke asked us all the question “why did you decide to join Deadset”. After finishing my university hockey career a few years ago, I struggled finding consistency in my fitness routine. My ‘why’ for joining Deadset was to prioritize fitness for myself again, now that it was no longer an expectation. Although everyone has their own personal ‘why’ for signing up, I believe it is the amazing sense of community that Deadset has cultivated that motivates everyone, including myself, to keep coming back. Deadset is a functional fitness gym that is inclusive to all.

The coaches are knowledgeable, encouraging, and passionate about what they do. They are able to modify each workout for every skill set and focus on proper technique to keep everyone safe and healthy. The gym community makes it easy to show up each day for class.
